BI Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL Salary: $110,000.00 USD Annually - $140,000.00 USD Annually Description:
We're rebuilding our entire data warehouse from the ground up, and we're looking for a BI Engineer who can walk in, take one look at a semantic model, and immediately start shaping it into something clean, scalable, and future-proof. Over the next few years, we'll be pulling in brand-new data domains, wiring up fresh workspaces, and expanding our analytics ecosystem piece by piece. If you love the smell of a fresh data model, the hum of a well-tuned ETL pipeline, and the satisfaction of a Power BI dashboard that just sings, this is your playground.

This role is the face of the data team-our translator, our storyteller, our "here's what the data actually means" person. You'll know our data inside and out: how it's structured, how it behaves, and how the business actually uses it.

Where You Sit

You'll work under the department director and collaborate daily with Data Engineering, QA, and a wide range of business stakeholders. You're the person people come to when they need clarity, direction, or a dashboard that doesn't make them squint.

What You'll Own
Business Intelligence Development

• Report & dashboard craftsmanship - Build visuals that hit hard, load fast, and tell the story instantly.
• Query tuning - Write SQL that slices through complex business logic without breaking a sweat.
• Ensure every report is accurate, reliable, and performs like a well-oiled machine.
• Push our analytics capabilities forward with ML/AI where it makes sense.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Be the go-to person for reporting questions, data meaning, and "can you help me understand this metric."
• Run trainings and office hours that actually help people-not just check a box.
• Translate business requirements into technical solutions that feel intuitive and scalable.
• Knock out tickets and bug reports with speed and clarity.

Data Modeling & ETL

• Semantic modeling mastery - Design and refine models that make downstream reporting effortless.
• Partner with Data Engineering to shape pipelines and processes that feed analytics clean, trustworthy data.
• Troubleshoot upstream performance issues and help tune the warehouse as it evolves.

Operational Support

• Keep our reporting ecosystem healthy, fast, and available.
• Troubleshoot issues before they become outages.
• Spot automation opportunities and eliminate repetitive manual work.
• Uphold data governance standards across the environment.

Collaboration

• Manage and prioritize your workload through our ticketing system.
• Communicate clearly in stand-ups and stakeholder meetings.
• Participate in code reviews to maintain quality and consistency.
• Contribute to documentation that future engineers will actually thank you for.

Leadership & Mentorship

• Share knowledge generously-help level up the team.
• Own complex projects end-to-end and deliver solutions that hit requirements cleanly.
• Champion new tools, better processes, and smarter ways of working.

What You Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Business Analytics, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years in BI, data engineering, data science, or a related field.
• Strong communication skills-you can explain a gnarly data model to a non-technical stakeholder without losing them.
• Deep expertise in Power BI (or Tableau) and semantic/data modeling.
• Expert-level SQL and solid Python skills.
• Hands-on experience with ETL pipelines and best practices.
• Comfort with Git and version control workflows.
• Working knowledge of ML/AI concepts-bonus points if you've applied them in BI environments.
