Highway Design Engineer

We are seeking a skilled Highway Design Engineer to join our team, responsible for major highway schemes and other civil engineering projects. This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in civil engineering, particularly in highway design and maintenance, looking to apply their expertise in a dynamic public sector environment.

Day-to-day of the role:

• Conduct feasibility studies for highway schemes to develop cost-effective solutions.
• Assess and procure necessary surveys for detailed design including traffic, geotechnical, topographical, and drainage to enable accurate cost estimating.
• Undertake detailed design tasks including pavement design, and vertical and horizontal alignments, ensuring compliance with current standards and specifications.
• Liaise with statutory undertakers on diversion works and manage these to align with scheme schedules.
• Produce and manage Bills of Quantities and specifications for internal or external contractors.
• Prepare contract documents for various agreements, ensuring compliance with procurement rules and industry standards.
• Act as "Designer" under CDM Regulations 2015, managing risk assessments and safety plans.
• Supervise contractors and consultants, ensuring accurate remuneration and scheme cost monitoring.
• Develop and review technical documentation and policies to maintain compliance with national standards.
• Engage with stakeholders including police, transport entities, Network Rail, and community groups to garner support and ensure project success.
• Produce financial and progress reports to aid effective project management.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Qualified to at least HNC in Civil Engineering, with Incorporated Engineer status or similar preferred.
• Proven experience in delivering a range of highway and civil engineering projects.
• Strong knowledge of AutoCAD and other design software used in highway projects.
• Extensive technical knowledge in highway design standards such as DMRB, LTN1/20, and Manual for Streets.
• Familiarity with NEC Engineering and Construction Contract and public procurement procedures.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
• Valid driving licence and willingness to work flexibly, including occasional evenings and weekends.
