HL7/FHIR Integration Engineer

Position: FHIR Integration Consultant / FHIR Analyst

Full time or W2 only

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced FHIR Integration Consultant with strong expertise in HL7 FHIR, HL7 v2.x, healthcare data integration, and interoperability. The candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, configuring, testing, and supporting healthcare interfaces and FHIR-based integrations between payer, provider, EHR, clinical, pharmacy, and other healthcare systems.

The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience with FHIR R4, HL7 v2.x, REST APIs, FHIR resources, implementation guides, interface engines such as Rhapsody or Mirth Connect, and healthcare data exchange standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, configure, and support FHIR R4-based healthcare integrations.

• Analyze business and clinical requirements and translate them into FHIR resource mappings and integration specifications.

• Develop and maintain healthcare interfaces using HL7 v2.x and FHIR standards.

• Work with FHIR resources such as Patient, Practitioner, Organization, Encounter, Observation, Condition, Medication, MedicationRequest, DiagnosticReport, AllergyIntolerance, and Coverage.

• Develop and validate FHIR REST APIs and support API-based healthcare data exchange.

• Analyze FHIR implementation guides and ensure resources conform to required profiles and specifications.

• Configure and troubleshoot integration engines such as Rhapsody, Mirth Connect, Cloverleaf, or similar platforms.

• Perform data mapping, transformation, validation, and reconciliation between source and target systems.

• Troubleshoot interface failures, message errors, API issues, and data-quality problems.

• Perform integration, functional, regression, and end-to-end testing.

• Validate FHIR resources using appropriate validation tools and implementation guides.

• Collaborate with healthcare architects, developers, business analysts, clinical teams, QA teams, vendors, and trading partners.

• Maintain interface specifications, mapping documents, technical documentation, and operational procedures.

• Support production implementations, monitoring, incident management, and root-cause analysis.

• Ensure healthcare integrations follow applicable HIPAA, security, privacy, and data-exchange requirements.

• Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Skills

• Strong hands-on experience with HL7 FHIR R4.

• Strong understanding of HL7 v2.x messaging.

• Experience with FHIR resources, profiles, extensions, references, bundles, and terminology.

• Experience with FHIR REST APIs and JSON/XML.

• Experience with FHIR implementation guides and resource validation.

• Healthcare interoperability experience across payer, provider, EHR, clinical, claims, or pharmacy systems.

• Experience with integration engines such as:

  • Rhapsody

  • Mirth Connect

  • Cloverleaf

  • Corepoint

• Strong understanding of healthcare data mapping and transformation.

• Experience with SQL and healthcare data validation.

• Knowledge of healthcare standards such as CDA, X12, and terminology standards is preferred.

• Experience with API testing tools such as Postman.

• Understanding of HIPAA and healthcare data privacy requirements.

• Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or other EHR platforms.

• Experience with payer systems and claims data.

• Experience with pharmacy/medication data exchange.

• Experience with Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.

• Knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, API security, and authentication.

• Experience with Python, Java, JavaScript, or scripting for integration automation.

• Experience with healthcare APIs and interoperability modernization initiatives.

• HL7 FHIR certification or equivalent healthcare interoperability certification.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Healthcare Informatics, Engineering, or a related field.

• Typically 5+ years of healthcare IT/integration experience, with significant hands-on experience in HL7/FHIR.

• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

• Healthcare interoperability certification is a plus.
