Quick overview
Job description
The Director, Conversion Rate Optimization is a hands-on practice leader who builds, sells, and independently delivers CRO services across 829’s Brand & Digital Experience practice.
You’ll pitch CRO to prospective and existing clients, translate business goals into optimization programs, and personally execute the analysis, experimentation, and reporting required to deliver measurable results.
Initially operating as an individual contributor, you’ll own core CRO delivery, client communication, and engagement management. You’ll personally perform routine research, analysis, experimentation, and reporting, drawing on agreed specialist support for technical implementation or measurement needs. All supporting resources and tooling must be accounted for in engagement scoping and pricing.
Success requires strong judgment across client delivery, sales, experimentation, and engagement economics, with the ability to balance independent execution and collaboration.
What You'll Do
Commercial Ownership & Growth
Proactively identify and pitch CRO opportunities to prospective and existing clients.
Lead CRO discovery calls, presentations, RFP contributions, and proposal discussions, connecting recommended services to client business goals.
Evaluate existing accounts to identify opportunities for audits, optimization projects, and recurring CRO programs.
Develop scopes and pricing recommendations with clear deliverables, measurement approaches, and resource requirements.
Partner with Sales and account leadership to advance opportunities through close, owning the CRO expertise, solution, and pitch.
Client Leadership
Serve as the primary contact for CRO scope, delivery, and results, while keeping designated account leaders informed of commitments, commercial opportunities, and risks.
Lead client conversations that connect optimization recommendations to revenue, qualified leads, and other relevant business outcomes.
Adapt programs to client budget, traffic volume, business model, and data maturity.
Present results and recommendations clearly, including measurement limitations and tradeoffs.
CRO Delivery & Quality Assurance
Independently deliver engagements from discovery and audit through research, hypothesis development, experiment execution, analysis, and reporting.
Personally retrieve, validate, and analyze website and funnel data to establish baselines and identify conversion barriers.
Use behavioral research and customer feedback to prioritize improvements across landing pages, product pages, forms, checkout flows, and other conversion paths.
Configure and operate experimentation tools and implement routine tests, including copy, calls to action, forms, and page variations.
Write conversion copy and experiment briefs, and maintain prioritized testing roadmaps.
Define success criteria and measurement requirements before launching experiments. Validate implementation, tracking, and results.
Determine when traffic or data quality cannot support meaningful testing and recommend appropriate research or direct improvements.
Independently prepare CRO reports and document findings that inform subsequent work.
Financial, Pricing & Operational Leadership
Establish a commercially viable delivery model that accounts for personal execution time, tooling, and specialist support.
Manage engagement schedules, scope, and budgets without routine account or project management support.
Identify implementation dependencies before committing to scope, pricing, or timelines.
Secure agreement on the scope, owner, timing, and cost of specialist work.
Escalate scope changes that affect delivery or profit.
Balance client delivery, pitching, and practice development against available capacity.
Practice Development & Scaling
Develop service offerings for smaller and larger clients, including focused audits and recurring optimization programs.
Evaluate experimentation and research tools against client needs, traffic, measurement requirements, and cost.
Recommend a commercially viable approach, including how licensing costs are funded and recovered.
Create repeatable delivery methods, experiment standards, reporting formats, and a library of documented findings.
Improve delivery efficiency while maintaining sound research and testing practices.
Recommend investments and future staffing based on demonstrated demand and financial performance.
Cross Functional Collaboration & Decision Making
Use established analytics infrastructure and standards, personally owning CRO analysis, experiment measurement, and engagement reporting.
Coordinate with Analytics on access, instrumentation, shared dashboards, and complex data requirements, with responsibilities and supporting effort agreed before delivery.
Work with Strategy, Design, Development, SEO, Paid Media, and account leadership to understand account priorities and assess tradeoffs.
Retain independent ownership of core CRO delivery, using limited specialist support for defined implementation needs.
Evaluate recommendations against the full account, including acquisition performance, conversion outcomes, compliance, and implementation costs.
Escalate unresolved tradeoffs to the executive sponsor. Decisions affecting other departments’ resources or client budgets require appropriate alignment.
What You'll Bring
8-10+ years’ Demonstrated experience independently delivering CRO programs, with examples showing personal execution, measured outcomes, and support required from others.
Proven ability to pitch and sell CRO services to prospective and existing clients.
Current practical proficiency in experimentation platforms, web analytics, behavioral research, and CRO reporting.
Configure, QA, launch, and monitor experiments using approved testing platforms and website tools.
Personally implement variations within those tools’ capabilities, and scope specialist support for changes requiring custom development, integrations, or substantial design work.
Strong knowledge of experiment design, sample requirements, statistics, and measurement limits.
Demonstrated CRO experience across ecommerce and lead generation, including measuring lead quality and downstream outcomes rather than form submissions alone.
Strong conversion copywriting, presentation, and client engagement management skills.
Commercial judgment across scoping, pricing, delivery effort, and profitability.
Agency or consulting experience preferred. Familiarity with Shopify and WordPress, and working knowledge of Claude are advantages.
