he most important skills are Python, working in cloud deployments, and Databricks. The biggest interpersonal trait I look for is curiosity. As long as someone is interested in new things, I can work with them to bring them up to speed on pretty much everything else. Though if they have some experience with financial operations (like a bank) that would be a great complementary skillset.

Role Overview

The AI Engineer will support FEMA by designing, developing, testing, and deploying AI/ML-enabled solutions that augment existing RPA capabilities. This role will directly contribute to AI-enabled use cases spanning improper payment and fraud detection support, data reconciliation and validation, back-office automation, natural language query/intelligent search, and AI-enabled dashboards and decision-support tools. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to design scalable, production-grade AI pipelines and support the overall goal of augmenting FEMA's automation capabilities to improve financial management, compliance, forecasting, and business process efficiency across OCFO and approved stakeholder functions.

Our team will collaborate with the client process owners to define requirements, architect, and deliver solutions on the Agency's AI roadmap.  Delivery will be a mix of Databricks and custom code deployed to FEMA's Azure cloud environments. Engineers should be adaptable, curious, and willing to pivot according to the client's needs, as well as able to serve as a guide to stakeholders who are not well versed in AI tools.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain AI/ML models and agentic workflows to support financial management, fraud detection, and operational efficiency use cases.
• Develop and deploy scalable AI pipelines using Databricks and Python, ensuring solutions are production-ready and well-integrated with existing RPA/automation infrastructure.
• Design and implement AI agent architectures (including LLM/RAG-based systems) to support natural language query, intelligent search, and decision-support capabilities.
• Collaborate with stakeholders, process architects, and government personnel to translate business requirements into technical AI solutions.
• Support post-deployment monitoring, enhancements, and bug fixes to sustain long-term solution reliability.

Required Skills

• Python Scripting & Analytical Development: Strong proficiency in Python for building analytical workflows, data processing scripts, and model integration.
• AI Agent Design: Demonstrated experience designing and implementing agentic workflows, including systems incorporating LLMs and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
• Machine Learning Fundamentals: Solid understanding of core ML/AI concepts (neural networks, transformer architectures, model training/deployment) to support fraud detection, risk assessment, and forecasting use cases.
• Databricks & Data Engineering: Hands-on experience building and managing data pipelines, notebooks, and ML workflows within Databricks environments.
• Cloud & Deployment Experience: Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform) for hosting, deploying, and scaling AI/ML solutions in a secure, government environment.
• Bonus: Experience with financial systems, federal financial management processes, or exposure to improper payment/fraud detection domains is a strong plus.
