Shift Rotations: Shift 1: 8 AM 5 PM; Shift 2; 4 PM 1 AM; Shift 3: 12 AM 9 AM & Weekend support based upon roster

Duties and Responsibilities

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Backup & Recovery Engineer to support a large-scale, mission-critical enterprise data protection environment. The engineer will be responsible for day-to-day backup operations, troubleshooting, incident resolution, platform maintenance, disaster recovery readiness, and continuous improvement of the backup infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Dell Technologies data protection products, particularly Dell Avamar, PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM), and PowerProtect Data Domain, along with solid knowledge of enterprise infrastructure, networking, storage, databases, and virtualization.

The role requires someone who can independently troubleshoot complex backup failures, work with infrastructure and application teams, manage incidents through resolution, and participate in backup platform upgrades, migrations, and modernization initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Administer, monitor, and support enterprise backup and recovery infrastructure.

Perform daily operational monitoring of backup jobs, failures, capacity, replication, and system health.

Troubleshoot complex backup and restore failures across physical, virtual, database, NAS, and application workloads.

Administer and support Dell Avamar environments, including Avamar Virtual Edition.

Administer and support Dell PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM).

Manage and troubleshoot PowerProtect Data Domain systems and integrations.

Support Avamar/DD Boost and BoostFS configurations and troubleshooting.

Monitor backup environment health, capacity, performance, and SLA compliance using Data Protection Advisor (DPA) and other monitoring tools.

Perform backup restores and application/database recoveries based on business requirements.

Support disaster recovery, failover/failback, and recovery validation activities.

Participate in platform upgrades, patching, lifecycle management, migrations, and technology refresh projects.

Perform root-cause analysis for recurring backup failures and implement permanent corrective actions.

Work closely with server, database, virtualization, storage, network, cybersecurity, and application teams.

Create and maintain operational procedures, runbooks, architecture documentation, and knowledge-base articles.

Manage incidents, problems, changes, and service requests using ServiceNow or similar ITSM platforms.

Participate in major incident calls and provide technical leadership during backup- and recovery-related outages.

Work with Dell Technologies support and other vendors when advanced troubleshooting or escalation is required.

Support security initiatives involving backup infrastructure, privileged access, immutability, ransomware protection, and cyber-recovery practices.

Identify opportunities for automation and operational efficiency.

Key Candidate Characteristics

The successful candidate should be able to:

Troubleshoot rather than simply monitor backup jobs.

Understand the end-to-end data path from the protected workload through the backup application to the Data Domain target.

Determine whether a failure originates with the backup product, client, operating system, database, network, storage, or target system.

Clearly communicate technical findings during production incidents.

Take ownership of incidents through resolution.

Work independently while collaborating effectively with a large infrastructure team.

Learn new technologies as the environment transitions from legacy backup platforms toward PowerProtect Data Manager and modern cyber-resilient data-protection architectures.
