Job Description

At Smart, our mission is to transform retirement, savings and financial wellbeing, across all generations, around the world.

THE ROLE

As part of the central data team, you will work closely with stakeholders to translate business challenges into questions that can be answered with data, delivering high-quality business intelligence and reporting solutions that enable self-service and support effective decision-making across the business. We are a small team with big ambitions. We are building the foundations to enable our vision of maximising the value that our extensive dataset and modern data stack can generate for the business. We are designing for scale and embracing AI to accelerate delivery whilst enhancing quality and reliability of output. We support the entire business so our data is varied and complex. As such, we are seeking a self-starter who is comfortable navigating ambiguity and independently finding solutions within a fast paced environment. If you match our ambitions, are passionate about creating value from data, and want to help drive the evolution of our data capabilities, then we would love to hear from you.

What you will do:

Business Intelligence & Reporting Solutions

  • Build & maintain BI solutions: Design, build, and maintain high-performance, intuitive reports and interactive dashboards (primarily using Tableau) to enable self-service across the organisation.

  • Data visualisation: Translate complex datasets and concepts into clear, simple visuals that reduce cognitive load and accelerate decision-making.

  • Design for scalability: Develop data assets with enterprise scale in mind, ensuring solutions remain fast, maintainable, and adaptable as data volumes and business complexity grow.

  • Metric standardisation: Help establish and maintain centralised business definitions to ensure consistency across all reporting and analytics.

Stakeholder Partnership & Communication

  • Gather and refine requirements: Partner with stakeholders across the organisation to translate business needs into well-defined technical reporting requirements.

  • Data translation: Explain reporting to stakeholders in clear, non-technical terms and support interpretation of outputs which drive decision-making.

  • Drive data literacy: Support appropriate and effective use of data around the business through engagement, training and clear stakeholder-facing documentation.

Data Modeling & Quality Assurance

  • Build robust data models: Develop and maintain optimised and reliable solutions in our data warehouse (Redshift) using tools like dbt, collaborating closely with Data Engineering where required.

  • Ensure trust & accuracy: Maintain data quality and reporting reliability, manage the impact of upstream changes, and support business-critical processes with direct regulatory or customer impact.

  • Become an expert on our data: Build and maintain a deep understanding of our dataset, ensuring appropriate data sources and definitions are leveraged across BI and analytics solutions.

  • Peer review: Participate in code reviews and collaborative QA to validate the accuracy, efficiency and value of output.

Continuous Improvement & Team Culture

  • Automate & optimise: Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reliability through automation, better data processes and the responsible use of AI.

  • Consolidate & rationalise: Continually review our existing reporting inventory, identifying obsolete reports and supporting our transition to multi-use case data solutions which eliminate duplication, inconsistency and technical debt.

  • Be an active team player: Contribute your ideas to team discussions, retrospectives, and future planning to continuously improve how we work.

Data Governance & Documentation

  • Technical documentation: Create and maintain clear technical documentation for BI data products (reports, dashboards, data models).

  • BI Platform Administration: Manage Tableau site permissions, project structures, user licenses, and extract refresh schedules to keep the platform running smoothly.

  • Alerting & Incident Management: Establish processes for identifying data pipeline and reporting issues and proactively notifying end-users.

  • Testing & Version Control: Adhere to version control and deployment best practices, ensuring data assets are thoroughly tested, changes are tracked and documented, and key stakeholders review and approve before release.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The skills, experience, and aptitudes we are looking for are listed below but please don’t be discouraged from applying if you don’t meet every single one of these criteria – having a ‘can do’ attitude is sometimes more important than being able to tick every box:

Experience & Attributes

  • Proven track record: 3+ years of experience in a data role, with a focus on data manipulation, business intelligence and reporting.

  • Stakeholder partnership: A proven ability to work with stakeholders to deeply understand business problems, translate requirements into effective reporting solutions, and advise on best approaches.

  • Data translation & coaching: An effective technical communicator who can translate complex data for non-technical audiences and actively coach stakeholders to enhance overall data maturity.

  • Analytical curiosity: Inquisitive by nature, with sharp attention to detail and a natural inclination to look beyond the surface numbers to uncover underlying drivers.

  • Ambitious and agile learner: A fast, curious learner who is eager to independently explore and pick up new datasets, technologies and methodologies to innovate with purpose.

  • Organised & adaptable: Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks.

  • Collaborative team player: A reliable team player with a "team-first" mindset who thrives in a highly collaborative and supportive environment.

  • Financial Services/Pensions experience (Desirable): Experience within financial services is desirable; exposure to the pensions industry is a plus.

Technical skills:

  • Advanced SQL (Essential): Extensive experience of writing, troubleshooting, and optimising complex queries.

  • BI & Data Visualisation (Essential - Tableau Preferred): Strong experience building impactful dashboards and reports in a modern BI tool, with a preference for Tableau.

  • dbt (Desirable): Experience with dbt for data modeling, transformation, and managing the BI/analytics layer.

  • Python (Desirable): Experience using Python for data manipulation or automation.

  • AI Tools (Desirable): Practical experience incorporating AI assistants (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude) into development workflows.

  • Git / GitHub (Desirable): experience using version control for managing code, collaborating with others, and reviewing changes.
