About the Team

Brand & Communications is responsible for B Lab's global brand, narrative, communication strategy, and reputation management. The department ensures a consistent, compelling, and mission-aligned public presence for B Lab across all channels, audiences, and markets, spanning strategic communications, public relations, brand identity, integrated campaigns, and digital channels. Brand & Communications plays a critical role in how B Lab is perceived and in how it builds and protects its reputation globally. The department sits within the Chief Impact & Movement Building Officer’s portfolio with Programs & Policy, Partnerships & Development, and Community & Movement, ensuring brand and communications strategy supports and amplifies the organization's wider mission and movement-building work.
Strategic Communications & PR shapes B Lab's public narrative and protects its reputation. The function manages media relations, storytelling, and crisis response, owning external messaging, media relationships, and reputation risk management. The function also provides strategic oversight of internal communications, ensuring coherence between B Lab's internal and external voice.

About the Role

The Communications & PR Manager owns B Lab's press office and earned media delivery, balancing proactive story pitching and thought leadership placement with reactive press response: building and holding journalist relationships, drafting and issuing statements and releases, and acting as first point of contact for incoming press inquiries across the global network.
Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, this role shapes and delivers the earned media plan within the Director's global communications strategy, editorial standards, and crisis protocols: leading proactive pitching, owning media monitoring and insights, and preparing spokesperson briefings. The role requires sound news judgment, comfort operating under time pressure during reactive moments, and the independence to run the press office and represent B Lab publicly on non-crisis media matters, escalating emerging reputational risk to the Director.
This role is highly collaborative with strong stakeholder management skills: works with market PR leads to amplify coverage, facilitate cross-team learning, and uplift regional news highlights; collaborates with the Digital Communications Coordinator and Copywriter to align messaging across earned, owned, and thought leadership channels; and complements Brand & Campaigns' work through media support.

Core Responsibilities

Press Office & Media Relations [45%]

  • Oversee inbound media relations efforts, triaging and responding to press inquiries
  • Run proactive pitching and maintain media lists
  • Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with priority outlets, journalists, and writers to pitch for targeted coverage, in close collaboration with the Director
  • Pitch and place the thought leadership content, bylines, and narrative positioning that the Copywriter develops, securing earned-media coverage for it
  • Feed press insights, media trends, and real-time news judgment into B Lab's thought leadership strategy, flagging timely opportunities and emerging risks
  • Plan, write, and distribute proactive announcements and press releases, and maintain the press assets that support them, so B Lab's news reaches priority outlets
  • Lead drafting and coordination of reactive statements and press responses, aligning subject-matter leads and regional teams on the position and escalating emerging reputational risk to the Director

Writing & Speaker Support [25%]

  • Ghostwrite op-eds, keynote speeches, and talking points for speaking engagements
  • Manage delivery of inbound requests, including scheduling and event briefings
  • Maintain a standing library of core narrative assets and pre-approved talking points that can be quickly adapted for reactive or fast-turnaround speaking and media opportunities
  • Serve as the media point of contact for global initiatives and events (e.g., Climate Week, B Corp Month), coordinating with Strategic Partnerships, Policy, and Community teams
  • Copyedit and align communications and content produced by colleagues with key messaging and editorial standards in collaboration with the Copywriter

Cross-Network PR Coordination [20%]

  • Chair the PR & Thought Leadership Working Group (or equivalent circle), managing cross-region and market press office coordination
  • Report to the Director on shared global objectives and cross-regional PR alignment
  • Collaborate with the Digital Communications Coordinator and Copywriter to align messaging across earned, owned, and thought leadership channels
  • Work collaboratively with regional and market PR leads to amplify broader movement coverage, facilitate cross-team learning, and uplift regional news highlights

Media Monitoring & Insights [10%]

  • Lead exploration of media monitoring software as part of the digital infrastructure project, including requirements gathering, product assessment, and vendor selection
  • Manage press subscriptions and monitoring tools, and maintain coverage trackers
  • Review and leverage media coverage insights to identify potential partnerships and opportunities to amplify B Lab's message and establish thought leadership in new spaces

Major Objectives/Project for the role in the first 6-12 months

  • Stand up press office operations: Establish triage for global media inquiries, build the journalist database and media list, and lead selection and implementation of a media monitoring tool.
  • Take over the PR & Thought Leadership Working Group: Transition the chair from the Director, establish cadence and shared objectives with regional and market PR leads.
  • Land first executive writing deliverables: Ghostwrite and place 2-3 op-eds or keynote pieces for the Executive Team, and stand up the standing library of core assets and talking points.

About You

  • 5+ years' experience in media relations, PR, or press office roles, ideally in a nonprofit, mission-driven, or purpose-led organization
  • Demonstrated track record of securing earned media coverage and managing press relationships
  • Experience running press office logistics: media list management, inbound triage, and coordinating speaking/interview requests
  • Experience with media monitoring and media database tools (e.g., Meltwater, Cision, or similar)
  • Experience evaluating and selecting vendor tools (e.g., media monitoring software)
  • Comfortable chairing or running a cross-functional or cross-network working group
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, including experience ghostwriting op-eds, keynote speeches, and talking points

While not required these skills and experiences would be great to have:

  • Comfortable working across time zones with a globally distributed team
  • Able to navigate complex stakeholder environments internally and externally
  • Calm under pressure with sound judgment, situational awareness, and discretion
  • Natural news instinct; curious, current, and quick to spot what's newsworthy
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift
  • Highly collaborative and relationally savvy: builds trust quickly across geographies and functions
  • Ensures communications reflect and advance principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
  • Adaptable when operating in conditions of change, ambiguity, and organizational complexity

About B Lab
B Lab™ is the nonprofit behind Certified B Corporations™, a community of businesses that meet verified social, environmental, and governance standards. Together, our movement is working towards a more inclusive, equitable, and fair economic system.

Our history
B Lab began in 2006 with the idea that a different kind of economy was not only possible — it was necessary. Our founders Andrew Kassoy, Bart Houlahan, and Jay Coen Gilbert believed there was a better way to do business: better for workers, better for communities, and better for the planet. When our movement’s first 81 Founding B Corps signed the Declaration of Interdependence in 2007, they were not just proposing a better way of doing business. They were proposing a different definition altogether.

What we’ve achieved
B Lab became known for certifying B Corporations™, companies that meet verified standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. But we do much more than that. We help mobilize a global community of businesses committed to collective action on society’s most critical challenges. In 2010, B Lab was part of successfully drafting and passing benefit corporation in Maryland, the first U.S. state to do so. This created a legal framework that allows companies to keep their values of care and community, not just shareholder value, at the forefront. Today, benefit corporation legislation is active in 52 jurisdictions around the world.

Our future
In 2024, leaders from across the network agreed to evolve into a more integrated organization that embodies interdependence. This next iteration of our global network will balance global coherence with local agency to achieve our vision of economic systems change. We are now building this future together.
