Database Engineer

Description

We are looking for a Database Engineer to support critical data operations for an education environment in San Antonio, Texas. This role focuses on building reliable database solutions, managing secure access to data systems, and delivering timely information to internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise across database administration, data movement, and system documentation while helping ensure continuity, accuracy, and confidentiality in day-to-day operations.

Responsibilities

Build, maintain, and improve Microsoft Access databases to support reporting, data integrity, and operational efficiency. Manage permissions and ongoing administration for database servers, applications, and related data environments, including inbound and outbound data exchanges. Oversee secure file transfer tools and connected systems to ensure reliable movement of data across internal and external platforms. Deliver accurate data support to curriculum and assessment teams within established timelines and service expectations.

Create and refine procedures that strengthen database availability, minimize service interruptions, and improve overall system resilience. Execute backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning activities, including documenting and testing restoration processes on a regular basis. Establish and maintain database security controls that align user access with application needs and data protection standards. Document queries, filters, conversions, configurations, and technical procedures thoroughly, with records stored in accessible and redundant locations.

Support user account lifecycle management, system synchronization efforts, and application administration in collaboration with infrastructure and support teams. Partner with staff, vendors, and technical teams to troubleshoot issues, provide training, maintain current system knowledge, and assist with broader technology operations as needed.

Requirements

Hands-on experience administering databases, with strong capability in Microsoft Access and Access query development. Proficiency in SQL, SQL databases, and data manipulation techniques for extraction, transformation, and reporting. Working knowledge of ETL processes, flat-file handling, ODBC connections, and data import/export workflows. Experience with Python and familiarity with large-scale data technologies such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, or Kafka. Understanding of database backup, recovery, security, and disaster recovery practices.

Ability to support student information systems and other education-related data applications while maintaining strict confidentiality. Strong documentation, troubleshooting, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple requests and deadlines effectively.
