Job Description

Mechanical Design Engineer

Want more than just the CAD? This design role takes you into routings, bills of materials and client specs – with a clear path to Design Manager.

  • Clear progression to Senior Design Engineer and Design Manager
  • Structured development and technical training
  • 24 days holiday + bank holidays
  • Company pension

About the company

Our client is a long-established UK engineering manufacturer, designing and building materials handling equipment for the logistics sector.

Their systems are used by major distribution and manufacturing businesses worldwide, and most of what they make is exported. They're growing their design team and hiring two Mechanical Design Engineers.

The role

This is a broader role than most design jobs. As well as producing the designs, you'll handle routings and bills of materials, interpret customer specifications and follow projects from concept to delivery.

If you'd rather see the whole picture than sit on the drawing board, you'll get a lot out of it.

You'll:

  • Create designs and drawings in SolidWorks, mostly in 3D
  • Interpret customer specifications and turn them into workable designs
  • Build routings and bills of materials for production
  • Prepare costings, proposals and technical documentation
  • Carry out design risk assessments and keep work ISO compliant
  • Support testing, R&D and factory data maintenance
  • Work with production, sales, suppliers and customers throughout each project

What you'll bring

Essential

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Proven experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing environment
  • Strong SolidWorks skills
  • Confident working with technical drawings, specifications and manuals

Useful, not essential

  • DriveWorks or similar design automation tools
  • Experience creating BOMs and routings in an ERP system
  • Background in bespoke equipment or materials handling
  • Some knowledge of converting Creo models to SolidWorks

Benefits and culture

Wellbeing: Employee Assistance Programme.

Culture: Technically complex projects for UK and international customers.

Working arrangements

Hours: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours a week

Travel: Mainly office-based, with occasional site visits and project support
