Network Engineer - Riverbed Modeling SME
Location: Chantilly, VA (Hybrid/Partial Remote)
Role Overview
We are seeking a highly technical Network Engineer with deep expertise in network architecture, modeling, and simulation. The ideal candidate will bring a strong commercial telecommunications or service provider networking background and hands-on experience using Riverbed Modeler (OPNET) to design, model, and analyze complex network environments. This role will serve as the technical lead for network simulation efforts supporting the evaluation, optimization, and validation of large-scale network architectures.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (MUST HAVE)
Location

• Must reside in or be willing to regularly commute to the Washington, DC / Northern Virginia metropolitan area.
• Ability to support a hybrid work environment in Chantilly, VA.

Network Engineering Background

• Proven experience as a Network Engineer supporting large-scale commercial, carrier, telecommunications, or internet service provider (ISP) networks.
• Experience working for or supporting telecom companies is strongly preferred.
• Strong hands-on experience with routing, switching, transport technologies, WAN architectures, MPLS, and carrier-grade networking environments.

Network Modeling Experience

• Minimum of one year of hands-on network modeling and simulation experience.
• Experience building, modifying, executing, and analyzing network simulations to evaluate performance, reliability, scalability, latency, and throughput.

Key Responsibilities

• Create, execute, and analyze high-fidelity discrete-event simulations in Riverbed Modeler to evaluate network performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Serve as the subject matter expert for routing, switching, transport, and IP networking protocols.
• Develop and validate network architectures representing real-world carrier, enterprise, and service provider environments.
• Modify existing models or develop custom models using C/C++ to simulate proprietary or emerging protocols.
• Analyze OSI Layers 1-3, including Physical, Data Link, and Network Layer technologies.
• Identify bottlenecks, packet loss, latency issues, and performance constraints through simulation analysis.
• Develop LAN, WAN, and wireless network topologies to validate designs before deployment.
• Document methodologies, assumptions, findings, and recommendations in technical reports.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.
• Bachelor's degree with 14+ years, Master's degree with 12+ years, or PhD with 9+ years of relevant experience.
• Significant experience in network architecture, network engineering, and network modeling/simulation.

Technical Requirements

• Expert-level proficiency with Riverbed Modeler (OPNET) and Discrete Event Simulation (DES).
• Strong understanding of carrier and enterprise networking technologies.
• Experience with TCP/IP, Ethernet, MPLS, BGP, OSPF, QoS, and WAN technologies.
• Strong C/C++ programming skills for protocol and model development.
• Experience designing and testing complex WAN/LAN/WLAN architectures.
• Proficiency using packet analysis and troubleshooting tools such as Wireshark.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience with Riverbed SteelCentral AppResponse or NetPlanner.
• Experience supporting telecommunications carriers, internet service providers, or large network service providers.
• Experience with RF modeling, wireless systems, or satellite communications.
• Active security clearance or ability to obtain one (if applicable).
