Job description

About us

Our teams are putting the world's retailers online using cloud technology, robotics, AI and automation. Through the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP), we provide innovative technology and operational services to partners globally, supporting highly automated fulfilment centres and world-class online grocery operations.

As our global footprint expands, we are continuously investing in robust health, safety, fire and environmental management to ensure a safe, compliant and high-performing working environment. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in embedding a strong safety culture across our international operational services.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior HSFE Specialist to join our Operational Services team based in Hatfield (with travel), reporting directly to the Operational Resilience Director.

In this role, you will play a key part in establishing and driving Health, Safety, Fire, and Environmental (HSFE) compliance across our sites globally, embedding a proactive safety culture and ensuring consistent adherence to first-line requirements. Working closely with the HSFE Lead and operational leadership teams, you will provide day-to-day practical guidance and take ownership of delivering key first-line activities to support continuous improvement in safety standards across our operations.

The role involves travel across our UK CFCs, with potential international travel to our global sites when operational needs arise.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design for Future:
    • Support the design and continuous improvement of the HSFE Management System.
    • Help build a proactive safety culture across sites through engaging communication, training initiatives, and site-level engagement.
    • Work with operational teams to identify emerging risks, compliance gaps, and design mitigation plans ahead of need.
    • Contribute to the design of the annual audit and inspection schedule.
    • Support the development of H&S KPIs, operational metrics, and emergency preparedness activities.
  • Deliver for Today:
    • Support site inspections, audits, and risk assessments through the timely management and resolution of identified actions.
    • Support investigations into accidents, incidents, and near-misses, identifying root causes and driving corrective actions.
    • Provide daily advice, troubleshooting, and practical guidance to managers and operational teams on all H&S matters.
    • Coordinate responses to operational H&S queries and escalate complex issues when necessary.
  • Execute with Quality:
    • Maintain H&S documentation and reporting to ensure it meets required Group-defined and regulatory standards.
    • Establish clear reporting cadences to keep stakeholders and operational leadership updated on compliance and performance.
    • Implement sustainable, effective processes that maintain a safe and compliant operational environment.

About You

You are an organized, proactive, and solutions-focused safety professional who can build instant credibility and influence at all levels of an operation. You possess meticulous attention to detail, stay calm under pressure, and take a practical approach to resolving safety issues through sound, risk-based judgements.

You'll have:

  • Solid understanding of UK health and safety legislation and its practical application within an operational environment (knowledge of international H&S legislation is a strong plus).
  • Proven experience conducting risk assessments, site audits, inspections, and incident investigations.
  • Experience delivering practical H&S advice, training, and guidance to managers and operational staff across a multi-site network.
  • Experience developing or maintaining H&S policies, procedures, and training programmes.
  • Strong knowledge of incident reporting requirements (e.g., RIDDOR) and relevant regulatory body standards.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence positive safety behaviours across diverse teams.
  • Strong ability to produce clear, high-quality technical reports and data analysis, including incident trend analysis.
  • Qualifications: NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) is desirable; NEBOSH Diploma (or working towards it) is an advantage.

What You'll Get in Return

Our employee benefits are designed with our people in mind because we know they are at the heart of everything we do.

Alongside challenging work and clear opportunities for professional development, we offer:

  • Hybrid and flexible working
  • Private healthcare
  • Car Salary Sacrifice and Cycle to Work schemes
  • Free Shares and Life Assurance
  • 15% discount on Ocado.com shopping

  • Exclusive travel, retail and leisure discounts
  • Modern Head Office campus with café and restaurant facilities
  • Free shuttle bus to and from Hatfield Station
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
  • Enhanced pension scheme with company contributions up to 7%
  • Employee Assistance Programme

If you're looking for an opportunity to influence safety standards across a high-tech global operation, we'd love to hear from you.
