Job Description
We are seeking a Laser Safety Specialist to join our Global EHS team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in laser and radiation safety program management and a proven ability to conduct hazard analyses, perform laser calculations and measurements, and drive compliance to U.S. and international optical and radiation safety standards.
Responsibilities:
- Audit laboratories for radiation and laser safety compliance.
- Analyze safety hazards and assist in creating requirement specifications for hardware containing lasers, LEDs, and X-ray sources.
- Understand and implement laser and optical safety standards including FLPPS, ANSI Z136.1, IEC 60825, and IEC 62471.
- Create, review, and approve laser and optical hazard SOPs.
- Review and approve work performed by outside laser service technicians.
- Identify and develop corrective actions and communicate outcomes to stakeholders.
- Conduct power, spectral, and temporal measurements for laser and LED sources.
- Implement safety protocols required by CDPH for X-ray generators and perform X-ray leakage surveys.
- Perform fault simulations to validate optical safety and design robustness.
- Collaborate effectively with research and product teams and coach staff to establish compliant procedures.
- Cover labs in Sunnyvale, Burlingame, and Fremont, with other travel such as to Redmond, WA, as necessary.
- Support additional EHS programs as needed, including LOTO, lab safety, chemical safety, electrical safety, and machine guarding.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Physics, Optical Sciences or Engineering, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or related field. Direct LSO/RSO experience may substitute for degree.
- At least 5 years of experience as a Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
- Proficient with ANSI Z136.1 - The American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers.
- Familiarity with CDPH X-ray regulations and implementation of X-ray generator protocols.
- Experience with IEC 60825 and IEC 62471 and familiarity with FLPPS (21 CFR 1040.10/11).
- Experience in safety investigations during development or failure analysis and in technical field testing or reliability roles.
- Strong communication, report writing, and presentation skills with self-motivated, proactive work style.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience working as an LSO and/or RSO in hardware research or production environments.
- Proficiency with FDA/CDRH FLPPS and IEC 60825-1, IEC 62471-1, and related federal reporting requirements.
- Ability to perform laser calculations including MPE, NOHD, and NHZ across laser types and configurations.
- Experience conducting FMEA and Fault Tree Analysis and developing in-house optical safety test methods.
- Experience with RF/EMF safety (FCC and IEEE C95.1) and ultrasound safety.
- Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO) from BLS.
