Principal Test Engineer

Overview

Responsible for leading or co-leading quality engineering and software testing teams. Plans and executes software testing across many test types including systems integration, regression, functional, API, AI, and end-to-end. Responsible for testing complex and moderately integrated systems to ensure compliance with business requirements while following Navy Federal testing standards and best practices. Writes technically complex test plans, conducts functional and technical requirement analysis, creates test cases for new or modified systems, executes tests, and collects and archives auditable test evidence. Manages software detects while working closely with the business to understand risk and prioritize defect solutioning. Ensures testing solutions incorporate AI technologies to ensure the highest possible level of efficiency. Responsible for coaching peers and team members throughout the test lifecycle. Works independently with discretion.
Responsibilities

• Create highly complex Test Plans while following established Navy Federal Test Standards
• Perform highly complex analysis of test results, and present recommendations, potential alternatives, risks, and downstream impacts to all stakeholders
• Ensure clear, concise, and expert communication including progress reports, test plan and test case documentation, root-cause defect reporting, risk identification, and team impediments to facilitate an accurate understanding of testing activities
• Coordinate and perform testing of complex systems during System Integration and End-to-End testing phases
• Participate in highly complex System Development Life Cycles activities utilizing Scrum and SAFe agile best practices
• Participate in sizing and estimation for highly complex projects and changes
• Serve as subject matter expert and mentor to peers
• Create and update complex manual test cases within the approved and appropriate test tool(s)
• Build complex manual test cases with automation in mind by following established test management standards and best practices
• Execute existing highly complex automated test scripts
• Update highly complex automation test cases while trouble shooting errors
• Perform failure analysis utilizing tools such as Xpath troubleshoot web element issues
• Work with DevSecOps to develop test automation using NFCU's DevSecOps Test Automation Low Code Framework, ensuring adherence to established policies and best practices; troubleshoot more complex errors within automation scripts
• Develop test automation that meets audit traceability requirements by integrating required test artifacts into Azure DevOps and complying with DevSecOps CI/CD standards
• Create all required documentation (test results, knowledge articles, sign-off, etc.) following Navy Federal Testing Standards, tools and templates
• Document highly complex defects/bug and follow established defect/bug lifecycle procedures and policies
• Perform advanced root cause analysis for identified defects/bugs, provide detailed documentation and insights to developers for solutioning Collaborate with peers, Developers, business partners and all other stakeholders to ensure business needs are communicated, documented, and satisfied
• Perform analysis related to changes in policies, procedures, and products; determine downstream impacts on testing
• Analyze and identify complex processes or technology improvement opportunities, provide recommendations to include risk considerations and downstream impacts
• Provide recommendations related to testing practices to facilitate process optimization
• Participate in project and product team meetings, collaborating and contributing while maintaining line of sight on goals and objectives

Qualifications

• Expert technical skills working with various software programs
• Expert knowledge of testing tools, dependent on the project/product
• Working knowledge of various database types and SQL skills required to query test related databases
• Advanced knowledge of Test System Management tools including Azure Boards, Azure Test Plans, and Micro Focus ALM
• Working knowledge of NFCU Test Automation Low Code Framework components including Gherkin, Cucumber, web element locators, xpath, HTML, CSS, Git version control, Selenium, and Azure Pipelines
• Working knowledge of API testing using Postman Pro
• Advanced knowledge of NFCU systems and environments including mainframe, on-premise, and cloud hosted applications
• Expert research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Expert written and verbal communication skills
• Expert knowledge of testing processes including test planning, test execution, and defect management
• Ability to handle fast-paced work environment with tight deadlines
• Extensive experience working and participating in cross-functional, multi-dimensional teams and projects
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Expert knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle
• Expert organizational, planning and time management skills
• Expert skill communicating with all levels within an organization
• Expert skill presenting findings, risks, conclusions, alternatives, and information clearly and concisely
• Expert skill exercising initiative and using good judgment to make sound decisions
• Expert knowledge of Navy Federal's services, products, and functions
• Extensive experience working in an IT environment
• Expert knowledge of Navy Federal business processes and applications
• 7-10 years of experience in technology testing
• Subject matter expert within business area/specialization with understanding of interrelationships of different disciplines
• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, a related field or the equivalent combination of education, training or experience

• ISTQB Foundation level certification (CTFL)
• ISTQB Advanced certifications (Agile Tester, Test Analyst/Test Manager)
• ISTQB AI testing certifications (AI Testing, Testing with Generative AI)
• ISTQB Test Automation Engineer
• DevOps Institute DevOps Foundation (DOFD) certification
