Quick overview
Job description
Create your best future and join Westpac as an Engineer
What’s the role?
Ready to build technology that helps millions of customers and colleagues?
Join Westpac as an Engineer and help design, build, test, release and operate reliable technology across Shared Data and AI, Digital, or Contact Centre teams.
You will independently deliver well-scoped outcomes within a supportive, multidisciplinary squad. Depending on the team, your work may include customer-facing web or mobile experiences, APIs and services, data products and pipelines, AI-enabled capabilities, colleague tools, contact centre platforms, or shared engineering foundations.
You will contribute across the full engineering lifecycle, from understanding the problem and making practical design choices through to implementation, automated testing, deployment, monitoring and production support. You will work within established engineering, security, risk and accessibility standards, collaborate with product, design, delivery, data and technology colleagues, and help improve the way your team builds and runs software.
This is a hybrid role within Westpac Technology. Opportunities may be available across Shared Data and AI, Digital, and Contact Centre teams. Location and working arrangements will be confirmed for each vacancy.
What do I need?
Essential skills
-
Practical experience building, testing and supporting production software, data solutions, digital products, platforms or related technology services.
-
Working knowledge of at least one relevant programming language, such as Java, Kotlin, C#, TypeScript, JavaScript, Python or Go. We value transferable engineering capability and the ability to learn adjacent technologies.
-
Experience contributing to well-structured, maintainable code and using source control, peer review and automated testing as part of day-to-day delivery.
-
An understanding of service or interface development, data handling, and integration patterns. This may include REST, gRPC, events, SQL, APIs, data pipelines or equivalent technologies relevant to your discipline.
-
Experience with modern delivery practices, such as Git, continuous integration and delivery, containers, cloud services, infrastructure as code, or similar tooling.
-
An understanding of how software is operated in production, including logging, monitoring, incident diagnosis, recovery and continuous improvement.
-
A security and risk-aware approach, with attention to secure defaults, privacy, accessibility, quality and reliable customer outcomes.
-
Clear communication and a collaborative approach. You can explain technical choices, ask questions when information is unclear, respond constructively to feedback and work with people from different disciplines and backgrounds.
Experience that may be useful
You do not need experience in every area below. We encourage you to apply if your experience is transferable and you are interested in growing your capability.
-
Customer-facing web or mobile engineering, design systems, accessibility, or digital experience delivery.
-
Data engineering, analytics platforms, data quality, data integration, machine learning, generative AI, model operations, evaluation or AI observability.
-
Contact centre technology, colleague tools, customer interaction platforms, workflow automation, telephony or conversational experiences.
-
Cloud-native engineering using AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform or equivalent technologies.
-
Using AI-assisted engineering tools responsibly, including validating generated outputs and maintaining security, quality and human accountability.
-
Working in a regulated, high-availability or large enterprise environment.
How you’ll make an impact
-
Own a feature, service, data product or material component from design through to production within agreed guardrails.
-
Make routine technical decisions, explain trade-offs and seek support when the risk or complexity requires broader input.
-
Build automated evidence of quality through appropriate unit, integration, component, contract, end-to-end, performance or resilience testing.
-
Design for normal failure conditions, operational visibility, safe deployment and recovery.
-
Contribute to team learning through reviews, pairing, documentation, incident learning and continuous improvement.
