Quick overview
Job description
About the Role
Join an early-stage AI company building software for insurance claims operations. As the first product designer, you will shape the end-to-end experience for claims professionals and help turn complex workflows into clear, dependable tools.
What You'll Do
Design end-to-end experiences across daily claims workspaces and dashboards for team leads and executives, prioritizing usability over visual polish alone.
Use product analytics, heat maps, user research, discovery calls, and direct observation to understand how people work and identify improvements.
Partner with product leadership, engineers, and customer-facing technical teams to translate user problems into workflows and implementation-ready designs.
Design AI-agent interactions that show users what an agent did, why it acted, what information it used, and where it is uncertain, with options for review and intervention.
Guide the product from an early interface toward an enterprise-ready experience, taking work from discovery through delivery.
Establish design principles and a design system, prototype with AI tools, and measure whether design changes make tasks easier to complete.
What We're Looking For
Five to eight years of product design experience, with consistent tenures at technology companies and experience as an early or founding designer.
A portfolio demonstrating dense, technical software used by operators throughout the workday, including complex workflows and UX-led problem solving.
Experience using behavioral data and user research to guide product decisions, and familiarity with product instrumentation or tools such as heat maps.
Hands-on prototyping with AI coding tools such as Claude or Lovable.
Experience in insurance, claims, healthcare, or another compliance-heavy operational domain is helpful, as is experience designing AI and human-in-the-loop products.
Experience building design systems and principles is a plus. This is a product design role and does not require frontend engineering.
Compensation & Benefits
Base salary is $170,000 to $220,000 annually. U.S. work authorization is required. Visa transfers are accepted, but new visa sponsorship is not available.
Location
On-site, five days per week in New York, NY.
