Job Description

This Business Development Manager role is a key commercial role within Doctors Health Fund, which is part of the Avant Group. As part of the Marketing and Growth team it is responsible for driving sustainable membership growth and strengthening the Fund's position as the preferred health insurance provider for Australia's medical community. The role will achieve this through primarily activating Avant's broader BDM network and by direct business development activity. Based in Sydney, this permanent full-time position sits at the intersection of cross-business unit collaboration, strategic planning and process optimization between DHF and other Avant businesses.

The role requires a driven, proactive, commercially minded individual who thrives in a target-driven environment and has a genuine understanding of the health and medical landscape. The Business Development Manager will build influential stakeholder relationships, collaborate across Doctors Health Fund and the Avant Group to deliver ambitious growth outcomes and represent Doctors Health Fund at industry events. A key focus will be developing and executing strategies, plans, activities and processes that enable Avant's existing BDM network to confidently promote private health insurance, refer leads seamlessly and support an integrated, exclusive PHI experience. Additionally, it will seek to find new channel and partnership opportunities within the medical community.

Key Accountabilities
  • Achieve agreed growth targets through qualified referral opportunities generated through Avant's broader BDM network and direct BDM activity.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the medical and healthcare professional community.
  • Activate Avant Group BDMs to confidently identify, promote and refer suitable Doctors Health Fund opportunities through education and support.
  • Design seamless digital referral pathways, sales tools, messaging and feedback loops that improve lead quality, conversion and network engagement.
  • Maintain and oversee designed BDM network process, strategy and performance.
  • Partner with the DHF Marketing team to deliver targeted campaigns, collateral, training and sales enablement that support an integrated PHI experience.
  • Identify customer needs and insights, and tailor solutions that support member acquisition and retention.
  • Apply proven problem-solving techniques to overcome objections and close sales effectively.
Market Differentiation & Brand Representation
  • Apply DHF and Avant value proposition in a relevant and competitive manner.
  • Represent DHF professionally at industry events, functions, conferences and forums.
  • Develop and maintain deep knowledge of Doctors Health Fund products, ensuring messaging is accurate, compelling and compliant.
Industry Intelligence & Compliance
  • Maintain an intimate knowledge of the health and medical environment, including key trends, regulatory changes and competitor activity.
  • Ensure all sales activity adheres to industry compliance requirements and applicable regulations.
  • Leverage data and management information to inform decisions, monitor performance and identify growth opportunities.
Stakeholder Engagement & Team Contribution
  • Be accountable for growth strategy through event, hospital and practice visitation, allied health network activation, collaborating across business to execute.
  • Collaborate with sales and call center teams establishing and maintaining robust lead management, performance reporting, insight generation.
  • Effectively communicate with and influence key stakeholders across the healthcare industry to build lasting partnerships.
  • Influence and collaborate across Doctors Health Fund and the Avant Group to align activity, develop and integrate referral programs, share insights and drive PHI growth outcomes.
  • Collaborate Marketing team colleagues to develop suitable sales tools, collateral and event assets.
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative team environment, sharing insights and best practices to lift collective performance.
  • Provide input to team planning and strategy discussions aimed at strengthening skills, capability and results.
Key Capabilities Required
  • Private Health Insurance Industry Knowledge - Familiarity with the private health insurance sector, including relevant legislation, regulatory bodies (APRA, PHIO) and competitive dynamics.
  • Sales & Service Experience - Demonstrated prior experience working within a BDM, sales and/or service culture, with a track record exceeding or meeting targets.
  • Strong Communication & Presentation Skills - Clear, confident and effective communication skills, including the ability to present persuasively to groups of varying sizes and seniority.
  • Customer Needs Analysis - Ability to actively listen, identify individual customer needs and concerns, and develop tailored responses that drive positive outcomes.
  • Performance reporting - Ability to report on performance and synthesis key themes and actions to take.
  • Self-Organisation & Time Management - High levels of self-organisation; skilled at managing workflow, prioritising competing tasks and consistently delivering outcomes within specified timeframes.
  • Data Comprehension & Utilisation - Effective ability to interpret, analyse and apply information and data to support sales strategy and performance monitoring.
  • Product & Compliance Knowledge - Ability to acquire, maintain and apply a deep knowledge of Doctors Health Fund products, and to understand and adhere to industry compliance requirements and regulations.
  • Problem Solving & Closing - Proven experience identifying problems, generating practical solutions and successfully closing sales across a range of customer scenarios.
  • Stakeholder Influence - Ability to build productive relationships with external healthcare, industry and partner stakeholders.
  • Channel & Network Enablement - Ability to influence distributed sales or referral teams without direct reporting lines and translate strategy into practical tools and activities.
