Job Description
W2 ROle. .
Server Thermal Engineer
Remote option open for an excellent match
Responsibilities:
• Leads end-to-end thermal development for enterprise server and rack platforms from concept through mass production, including requirements, architecture, simulation, component development, validation, qualification, and issue closure.
• Defines system thermal architecture and support limits for CPUs, GPUs and accelerators, DIMMs, storage devices, PCIe/OCP cards, chipsets, voltage regulators, power supplies, and other temperature-critical devices.
• Reviews system-level CFD models for airflow, pressure drop, heat transfer, local velocity, recirculation, and component temperatures; correlates predictions to instrumented mockups and production-representative hardware.
• Develops and optimizes air-cooling solutions, including fan selection and operating points, heat sinks, air baffles, ducting, venting, component placement, and airflow zoning, with attention to fan power, acoustics, redundancy, and serviceability.
• Evaluates and integrates liquid-cooling technologies such as direct-to-chip cold plates, closed-loop modules, manifolds, pumps, radiators, quick disconnects, and hybrid air/liquid architectures, including leak, reliability, and failure-mode considerations.
• Creates worst-case configuration matrices and executes chamber and rack testing across supported ambient conditions, workloads, population levels, fan failures, pump failures, and airflow-bypass scenarios.
• Partners with firmware and controls teams to define sensor placement, fan and pump zones, control algorithms, minimum-speed settings, transient response, fault behavior, and power-efficient cooling policies.
• Owns thermal specifications, test plans, support matrices, technical reports, design reviews, risk assessments, and phase-exit criteria; communicates findings and tradeoffs to program teams and senior leaders.
• Directs ODMs and component suppliers in the design, tooling, qualification, and production readiness of fans, heat sinks, liquid-cooling modules, and related thermal hardware; reviews data and drives corrective actions.
• Leads root-cause analysis of thermal, airflow, acoustic, and cooling-control issues found during development, manufacturing, or field operation, and implements durable corrective actions.
• Drives adoption of higher-efficiency cooling technologies and mentors engineers and lab personnel in server thermal analysis and validation methods.
