Job Description

Build specialist Windows desktop software used by engineers in the UK and worldwide.

Our client is an established, specialist engineering software company just outside Lincoln. Its flagship modelling software has been developed for more than 40 years and is used by local authorities and engineering consultancies across the UK and internationally. A small, product-driven business, it is now looking for an experienced C# developer to help bring several new Windows desktop applications to market.

This is a Windows desktop role, not a web role. You will design and build rich desktop applications, mainly in C#/.NET with some C++, alongside a highly experienced development team and the engineers who use and teach the software every day.

What you will do

  • Own significant features and development projects, from planning requirements with product experts to choosing the technical approach and delivering it.
  • Design, develop, test and debug functionality and user interfaces in C#/.NET.
  • Build new applications and extend established codebases.
  • Find and deliver performance improvements in application code.
  • Help package and release software, and resolve licence management issues.
  • Support customers and end users, and occasionally attend exhibitions, user groups and industry events.

What you will bring

  • Strong, in-depth C# skills with a focus on Windows desktop applications.
  • Significant experience of .NET.
  • Commercial software development experience, including owning complex technical work and making sound technical decisions.
  • An interest or aptitude in maths or engineering.
  • Clear written and spoken English, and the ability to explain solutions to complex problems.
  • A willingness to learn the engineering domain behind the software. No industry experience is needed; full training is provided.

Desirable, not essential: WinForms, .NET Framework, Visual Studio, C++/MFC, Direct2D or other graphical CAD-style interfaces, mathematical, engineering or scientific software, Mercurial, Windows Server and MySQL.

What is on offer

  • 35,000 to 50,000, depending on experience.
  • 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, and an extra 3 days for the Christmas closure.
  • Company pension with a generous employer contribution.
  • Private medical insurance after one year (subject to insurer acceptance and a maximum premium limit).
  • Training in the industry terminology and the company's own software.
  • Real influence on architecture, engineering practice and the future of the products.
  • Your work used by customers in the UK and internationally.
  • An informal, flexible working environment with short lines of communication and direct access to experienced engineers.

Working arrangements

The role is office-based, Lincolnshire. You will work on site while you learn the products and the industry. Greater flexibility may be considered over time.
