Our client, a well-established property & casualty insurance organization, is seeking a Controller to lead the accounting, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and internal control functions of the organization. Reporting directly to the CFO, this individual will play a critical role in ensuring the financial integrity of the company while supporting operational excellence, process improvements, and future growth initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in insurance accounting, statutory reporting, regulatory compliance, and financial controls, along with experience managing Yellow Book audits and working with state insurance regulators. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys a hands-on role and partnering across the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee all accounting and financial reporting activities.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare and review statutory and GAAP financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Ensure compliance with insurance regulatory reporting requirements and applicable accounting standards.
- Coordinate and manage annual Yellow Book audits, financial examinations, and external audit activities.
- Serve as the primary contact for auditors, regulators, and other external stakeholders.
- Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
- Oversee accounting support for policy, billing, claims, reinsurance, and investment operations.
- Partner with leadership to improve financial processes, reporting capabilities, and operational efficiencies.
- Support financial system enhancements, implementations, and automation initiatives.
- Leverage data and analytics to identify trends, risks, and business opportunities.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data across the organization.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities as needed.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff while promoting a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to support strategic initiatives and organizational objectives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- MBA and/or public accounting experience is a plus.
- Minimum 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience within the property & casualty insurance industry.
- Strong knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), insurance accounting, and financial reporting requirements.
- Direct experience with Yellow Book audits and insurance regulatory examinations preferred.
- Experience preparing and reviewing statutory financial statements and regulatory filings.
- Strong understanding of internal controls, risk management, and accounting best practices.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Proficiency with financial systems, reporting tools, and data analysis.
