Job Description

Trust & Safety Escalations Specialist
NCMEC & Law Enforcement Referrals

Location: Remote, with a strong preference for candidates working Eastern Time hours
Contract: 12-month W-2 contract
Pay: $135–$150 per hour, based on relevant experience
Schedule: Nontraditional schedule required, including either Sunday–Thursday or a Monday–Saturday coverage schedule. Participation in an on-call rotation will also be required.

Russell Tobin is supporting a leading AI research and technology organization in hiring a Trust & Safety Escalations Specialist for its Strategic Response and Escalations team.

This position will focus on reviewing high-risk user activity, assessing potential threats of harm, and managing sensitive escalations involving law enforcement and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). The specialist will apply established enforcement policies and referral criteria while making careful, defensible decisions under time-sensitive conditions.

The ideal candidate has a strong general Trust & Safety or content-review background, direct exposure to child-safety matters and NCMEC reporting, and experience reviewing violent threats, graphic violence, violent actors, or extremist content.

Responsibilities

  • Review user interactions and other customer signals for potential policy violations.
  • Assess violent exchanges and threats based on credibility, imminence, specificity, and potential risk to others.
  • Handle escalations and referrals to law enforcement and NCMEC using established reporting criteria and mandatory-reporting workflows.
  • Ensure referrals are timely, complete, accurate, and supported by clear documentation.
  • Develop subject-matter expertise in violence-related policy areas, including threats to life and cases where violence intersects with other policy violations.
  • Support general Trust & Safety enforcement work across a broader range of policy areas as operational needs change.
  • Apply established escalation thresholds consistently and elevate ambiguous or high-risk cases to the appropriate internal partners.
  • Maintain rigorous case records, evidence trails, and written reasoning that can withstand legal, regulatory, and external review.
  • Collaborate with Policy, Legal, Threat Intelligence, Strategy, and Operations teams to identify emerging threats, user-risk patterns, and potential policy gaps.
  • Flag content and behavioral patterns that may inform detection systems, classifier improvements, or enforcement-process changes.
  • Support customer communications and appeals associated with policy-enforcement decisions.
  • Participate in post-incident reviews and help translate individual cases into durable process improvements.
  • Triage cross-functional requests and provide timely operational guidance during strategic-response situations.
  • Participate in weekend coverage and an on-call rotation supporting urgent escalation workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional experience in Trust & Safety, content moderation, platform enforcement, investigations, intelligence analysis, crisis response, or a related field.
  • Direct experience with NCMEC CyberTipline reporting, child-safety referrals, or comparable mandatory-reporting workflows.
  • Experience reviewing graphic violence, credible threats, violent actors, violent extremist material, or other high-severity content.
  • Experience handling escalated cases involving potential harm to individuals or public safety.
  • Ability to assess risk using factors such as credibility, intent, imminence, and specificity.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to document complex decisions clearly for legal, regulatory, or external audiences.
  • Sound judgment when established criteria do not fully resolve a case.
  • Ability to work independently, follow detailed workflows, and recognize when additional escalation is necessary.
  • Strong attention to detail and a systematic approach to case review and documentation.
  • Ability to remain effective and accurate while working under time pressure.
  • Willingness and ability to work a nontraditional schedule and participate in on-call coverage.
  • Ability to work responsibly with highly sensitive and psychologically challenging material.

Strong Candidates May Also Have

  • Direct experience coordinating referrals or information requests with law enforcement agencies.
  • Experience performing threat assessments or investigating credible threats of violence.
  • A background in law enforcement, intelligence, investigations, crisis management, or emergency response.
  • Familiarity with the legal and regulatory frameworks governing platform escalations and mandatory reporting.
  • Experience enforcing policies for a digital platform, online service, social media company, or technology organization.
  • Experience analyzing user behavior and identifying patterns that may indicate emerging safety risks.
  • Knowledge of AI safety, responsible technology development, or ethical AI deployment.
  • Experience partnering with Legal, Policy, Engineering, Product, or Threat Intelligence teams.
  • Familiarity with appeals, customer communications, or post-incident review processes.
