Main Responsibilities:

The Surgical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for the operational management, clinical readiness, organisation, and continuous improvement of the OSSC Surgical Training Laboratory.

The post holder will lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of all laboratory activities, ensuring that faculty, learners, industry partners, and stakeholders have access to a safe, compliant, efficient, and professionally managed surgical training environment.

The post holder will be expected to anticipate problems before they arise, while delivering complex training events seamlessly.

This role requires an exceptional organiser who combines strong clinical knowledge with advanced logistical capability, enabling the successful delivery of complex surgical education programmes. The successful candidate will be highly proactive, solutions-focused, and able to anticipate operational requirements, resolve challenges independently, and maintain the highest standards of quality and service.

The role is central to ensuring OSSC remains a centre of excellence for surgical education, simulation, procedural skills training, and industry engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Surgical Training Laboratory Operations

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the surgical training laboratory.
  • Ensure all laboratories, training spaces, equipment, and resources are maintained in a state of readiness.
  • Develop and maintain systems and processes that promote efficient and effective laboratory operations.
  • Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities for service improvement.
  • Act as the primary operational lead for laboratory activities and event delivery.

Programme Planning and Logistics

  • Coordinate all logistical requirements for surgical training courses, cadaveric workshops, simulation activities, and industry-sponsored education events.
  • Manage room allocation, equipment requirements, lab resources, surgical instruments, and consumable stock.
  • Ensure equipment, specimens, and training resources are available, compliant, and correctly prepared for each programme.
  • Anticipate operational risks and resolve issues before they impact programme delivery.
  • Support multiple concurrent activities while maintaining high levels of accuracy and organisation.


Clinical and Technical Support

  • Apply clinical knowledge to support the delivery of surgical and procedural skills training.
  • Provide technical expertise regarding surgical instruments, medical devices, simulation equipment, and laboratory resources.
  • Support faculty and participants during training activities and troubleshoot technical issues where required.
  • Ensure laboratory practices align with current clinical standards and best practice.


Equipment, Inventory and Asset Management

  • Maintain oversight of surgical instruments, simulation equipment, capital assets, consumables, and laboratory inventories.
  • Develop and manage inventory tracking systems to ensure effective stock control and asset utilisation.
  • Coordinate equipment servicing, maintenance, repairs, decontamination, and replacement programmes.
  • Forecast future equipment and consumable requirements and support procurement activities.
  • Ensure robust governance and accountability for laboratory assets.


Governance, Quality and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety, infection prevention, tissue-handling, laboratory, and organisational policies.
  • Assist the Designated Individual and Person Designate in maintaining standard operating procedures and operational documentation, to ensure compliance to HTA and HSE standards.
  • Participate in audits and inspections and implement recommendations for improvement.
  • Undertake risk assessments and ensure appropriate mitigation strategies are in place.
  • Promote a culture of quality, safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.


Stakeholder and Relationship Management

  • Build effective working relationships with clinicians, faculty, trainees, suppliers, industry partners, and internal departments.
  • Act as a trusted expert and point of contact for laboratory operations and educational programme delivery.
  • Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams to support strategic and operational objectives.
  • Contribute to service development and the future growth of the surgical training laboratory.
  • Undertake other technical duties as required including maintaining clean and hygienic conditions, conducting regular maintenance checks, reporting faults and arranging repairs, monitoring and organising resource requirements.
  • To undertake training in accordance with HTA regulations, as and when required.


Experience:

  • Degree, diploma, or equivalent experience in a healthcare, clinical, biomedical, operating theatre, radiography, laboratory science, medical technology, or related discipline.
  • Substantial experience working within a healthcare, surgical education, simulation, laboratory, or medical technology environment.
  • Experience supporting surgical training, procedural skills development, simulation, or healthcare education activities.
  • Experience managing complex operational and logistical processes.
  • Experience of inventory management, asset control, equipment governance, and procurement coordination.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary clinical teams and external stakeholders.


Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability and experience of handling human cadaveric material
  • Comprehensive understanding of Health and Safety Legislation and best practice
