Role Overview

Plymouth Rock Assurance is seeking a highly experienced Senior Java Developer / Application SME to lead and take ownership of a portfolio of enterprise applications. This is a hands-on technical leadership role that combines full-stack Java development with application ownership, stakeholder management, and strategic problem-solving.

The ideal candidate will serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for critical business applications, providing technical leadership while driving application stability, modernization, and continuous improvement. In addition to strong Java development expertise, the successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills, leadership capabilities, and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving complex technical and business challenges.

Key Responsibilities

• Own and manage a portfolio of enterprise applications as the designated Application SME.

• Lead the design, development, enhancement, and support of mission-critical Java applications.

• Collaborate with business users, product owners, architects, and cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, high-quality solutions.

• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to development teams.

• Track application health, production issues, risks, dependencies, and project deliverables.

• Drive root cause analysis, troubleshoot complex production issues, and implement long-term solutions.

• Communicate project status, risks, and technical updates effectively to leadership and business stakeholders.

• Build scalable RESTful APIs and microservices using modern Java technologies.

• Develop and enhance responsive front-end applications using Angular.

• Optimize application performance across Java, JVM, SQL, and database layers.

• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve development productivity, code quality, testing, and documentation.

• Promote engineering best practices, coding standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.

• Experience tracking production issues, action items, technical dependencies, and application roadmaps.

• Excellent communication skills with both technical teams and executive business stakeholders.

• Ability to proactively identify risks, recommend solutions, and drive issues to resolution.

AI-Assisted Development (Required)

Candidates must have practical experience using AI-powered development tools to improve software engineering productivity.
