Overall Purpose and Objective of Position
This position will be a technical manager and leader of the resources at LDC Grand Junction, for overseeing all instrumentation and control activities at the site including real time health of said systems in our DCS SCADA system. This position will be responsible for overseeing multiple operational technologies and electrical power systems. This includes directing LDC and 3rd party I&E technicians as needed, to support the efficient installation, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all instrumentation, measurement, control, power generation, and CSD devices for power generation both boiler steam and turbine electrical. This manager will also interface directly with the utility on incoming and outgoing power systems. This manager will be focused on optimizing the performance and reliability of all plant systems related to power generation, combustion, or instrumentation, driving preventative maintenance and repair initiatives, while maintaining world class safety standards and expectations. In addition, this manager will work closely with peers and other management to support operational objectives and foster enhanced team coordination. To be successful this individual should not only be highly technically adept, but also innovative, with a keen eye for detail and problem solving.
Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Lead and manage the Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) team, including I&C technicians both internal and external, and support staff.
- Develop and implement training programs to enhance the technical skills and expertise of team members in control systems and instrumentation.
- Ability to work on-site in a power plant environment, perform hands-on tasks in the field solely or with the Solar team ensuring tasks are carried out efficiently and safely.
- Plan, prioritize, and oversee the maintenance of process automation systems to optimize steam and electrical power production, ensuring the reliable operation of boilers and environmental systems.
- Foster a safe work environment by promoting adherence to safety protocols and addressing unsafe practices or conditions.
- Cultivate strong communication and relationships across all teams
- Oversee maintenance activities related to electrical systems, process control, and automation systems, including installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and calibration, ensuring thorough documentation and peak system performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with Area Managers on routine electrical and mechanical engineering tasks as well as special projects.
- Supervise troubleshooting and maintenance of distributed control systems (DCS) and programmable logic controllers (PLC), including Allen Bradley, Schnieder and Solar systems and the ability to troubleshoot and evaluate plant performance issues using eDNA and historians.
- Oversee the reception, installation, and configuration of all process related servers, networks, and equipment
- Monitor all data communication platforms
- Organize and maintain all license support documents
- Prepare documentation diagrams, process control narratives, instrumentation lists, I/O lists, as any part of project design or maintenance activities
- Provide oversight and support for Solar workstation computer and related equipment maintenance.
- Ensure that all responsibilities are executed in accordance with LDC Management’s established expectations.
- Contribute to the annual budgeting process for maintenance-related parts and materials.
- Schedule and manage preventive maintenance (PM) calibration of various field instrumentation.
- Identify and report necessary spare parts for efficient plant operation and improvement initiatives to Area Managers and direct managers
- Offer technical guidance and mentorship to the I&E team, ensuring continuous development and expertise.
- Uphold plant policies and procedures, ensuring all tasks are performed safely and in compliance with environmental regulations.
- Participate in Process Safety, 3D Model and Design Reviews such as:
- PRA/PHA/HAZOP
- Control narratives
- Cause and Effect documents
- Electrical Area Classification
- Take on additional responsibilities as required and mutually agreed upon with Primary Energy Management.
Additional Responsibilities
- Serve as one of the primary interfaces for engineering on instrumentation, electrical generation or boiler issues with operations.
- Problem solving and troubleshooting as requested by operations or maintenance when requested.
- Works with the Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) staff to assure regulatory certifications and compliance on capital and process improvements, normal operating practices regarding SHE
- Reviews plant operations for potential process / procedural improvements for higher throughput and / or cost savings.
- Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to.
- Ensure employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work.
- Ensures unsafe working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable.
- Follows construction completion criteria and construction requirements with the maintenance manager.
- Assists in the project start-up with local management.
- Additional projects and duties as assigned.
Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses
The following is the basic qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering; Chemical, Electrical or automation/Instrumentation engineering
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) is preferred.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) is desired.
Experience
The following is the required qualifications:
- Minimum of 3+ years of relevant process supervisory experience.
- Extensive experience in managing instrumentation, and controls operations, related to Industrial Energy and Power Generation or Utility sectors
- Deep knowledge of industry process control systems and automation systems including but not limited to : DCS and PLC systems.
- Expertise in industrial networking and communication protocols.
- Comprehensive understanding of VFDs, PID controllers, temperature and pressure transmitters, flow meters, proximity probes, and position sensors
- Proven ability to perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Advanced trouble shooting skills for electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control systems.
- Hands on experience with steam turbines, environmental control systems, boilers and related boiler water treatment systems.
The following is the preferred qualification:
- Experience and direct involvement in the construction and start-up of plant improvement projects.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)
- Knowledge of applicable government regulations and personnel policies to ensure compliance and accomplish the safe and timely completion of capital projects and / or process changes.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding safety, health and environmental management to ensure compliance and accomplish the safe and timely completion of capital projects and / or process changes.
- Familiarity with the basics of plant processing, oils recovery, grain and milling operations or biofuels is desired.
- Proficiency with applicable computer software packages including AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project.
- Knowledgeable with applicable software packages such as Wonderware, RSLogix, and PowerLogic.
- Exposure to plant operations, maintenance and safety
- Knowledge of design codes and governmental regulations affecting the industry including but not limited to NFPA 36, OSHA and EPA standards and requirements
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and interest with strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational and planning capabilities with the ability to handle multiple assignments at the same time.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail and multiple priorities, primarily conducted in a climate-controlled office environment. Travel is required as needed. Periodic visits to industrial operations areas are necessary with exposure to variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions. Anticipate regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust and odors, and occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise during plant visits. Some stair climbing is required. Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects or to respond to emergencies.
Decision Making/Accountability
Able to work unsupervised and make critical decisions on project and plant process management that have direct implications to budgets and profitability of an agricultural processing plant. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple levels of management to make recommendations on capital projects and process improvements.
