The below job description will outline this position of: Design Engineer - Mechanical

Typically, this person will be responsible for producing innovative and cost-effective mechanical designs from concept through to production using 3D CAD. The role focuses on developing high-quality engineering solutions, creating detailed models and drawings, supporting prototype development and working closely with manufacturing and project teams to deliver successful mechanical products

Working within a collaborative engineering environment, the Design Engineer will play a key role in delivering complex mechanical systems across automotive and specialist engineering applications.

HSB Technical's client is an established and well-regarded engineering business specialising in the design and manufacture of special purpose machinery and equipment.

Duties and responsibilities of the Design Engineer - Mechanical:
  • Apply existing knowledge and experience to produce innovative mechanical designs
  • Create detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings to company standards
  • Design mechanical components and assemblies from concept through to production
  • Design sheet metal, machined, fabricated and cast components
  • Apply practical knowledge of automotive systems and mechanical engineering principles
  • Visualise complex assemblies using a systems engineering approach
  • Select suitable materials and manufacturing processes
  • Carry out hand calculations and support FEA/CAE assessments where appropriate
  • Assess prototypes to ensure correct fit, function and performance
  • Revise existing designs to meet changing project requirements
  • Maintain accurate drawing records and PDM documentation
  • Liaise with suppliers to source suitable components
  • Participate in design reviews and implement engineering improvements
  • Produce technical reports and maintain project documentation
  • Support vehicle testing and data logging activities where required
  • Work independently whilst collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver projects on time

Qualifications and requirements for the Design Engineer - Mechanical:
  • HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a related discipline
  • Proven experience in a Mechanical Design Engineer position
  • Strong 3D CAD modelling and engineering drawing experience
  • Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies from concept through to manufacture
  • Practical knowledge of automotive systems and mechanical engineering principles
  • Experience with sheet metal, machined parts, fabrications and cast components
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacture (DFM)
  • Strong communication skills with customers, suppliers and internal engineering teams
  • Good report writing, documentation and organisational skills
  • Computer literate with the ability to adapt to new engineering software
  • Ability to work on your own initiative and deliver against project timescales
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a collaborative approach to engineering design
