Job Description
SAP Migration Upgrade Lead or Architect - ECC6, Recovery Lead
Remote
Role Summary
We are seeking a senior SAP ECC6 Upgrade Recovery Lead to provide technical leadership for a business-critical support-package upgrade. The current environment is on support package level 17 and must be upgraded to target level 37.
This individual will assess the current program, confirm the appropriate SAP-supported upgrade path, develop a recovery plan, and direct an existing systems-integrator team of approximately 10–12 resources. The successful candidate must be equally comfortable resolving complex SAP technical issues, challenging senior consultants, and communicating risks and recommendations to executive leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the current ECC6 environment, upgrade plan, technical risks, defects, and unresolved decisions.
- Confirm the supported upgrade path from support package level 17 to level 37, including any required intermediate steps.
- Develop and lead the upgrade recovery plan, critical path, dependencies, and technical governance.
- Direct and challenge the systems-integrator team across technical, functional, integration, and testing workstreams.
- Oversee upgrade tooling, SAP Notes, custom-code remediation, add-on compatibility, transports, SPDD, SPAU, and environment readiness.
- Provide clear executive reporting on risks, options, decisions, and progress.
Required Experience
- Extensive hands-on experience leading SAP ECC6 technical upgrades and support-package implementations.
- Prior experience recovering an SAP upgrade that was behind schedule, technically challenged, or at risk of failure.
- Deep understanding of ECC6 architecture, support-package stacks, enhancement packages, dependencies, add-ons, and SAP Notes.
- Demonstrated experience determining upgrade sequencing and whether intermediate support-package installations are required.
- Advanced knowledge of SAP Software Update Manager and Maintenance Planner.
- Strong experience with SPDD, SPAU, modification adjustment, custom-code remediation, transports, and landscape planning.
- Experience assessing upgrade impacts across FI, tax, MM, integrations, interfaces, and custom applications.
- Experience directing large systems-integrator, offshore, or blended delivery teams.
- Ability to challenge senior SAP architects and consultants using sound technical reasoning and prior experience.
- Strong troubleshooting, technical decision-making, and issue-resolution skills.
- Executive-level communication skills with the ability to translate technical issues into business risks and options.
- Experience in a complex manufacturing or multinational SAP environment is strongly preferred.
