Principal Engineer – Mechanical Engineering | Kirkby-in-Furness, United Kingdom | Hybrid | Circa £55,000

The Role

  • Lead the design of mechanical systems, sub-systems, and equipment for next-generation submarines.
  • Conduct functional design activities, calculations, and analysis, producing essential design documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers and stakeholders to achieve design completion and verify compliance with technical requirements.
  • Provide specialist expertise to support installation, integration, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and ensure adherence to product safety and SHE standards.
  • Engage with cross-functional project teams to drive engineering tasks forward.

What You'll Need

  • Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in designing mechanical systems and specifying complex, high-value mechanical equipment.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience dealing with diverse internal and external parties.
  • Knowledge of the complete engineering lifecycle, including requirements, system design, integration, and acceptance phases.
  • Good awareness of product safety and SHE principles.
  • Experience operating within the defence or aerospace sectors is advantageous.
