Reports To: CFO

About Us

Protera Health, Inc. is a virtual physical therapy startup delivering care to patients across multiple states. We're a small, close-knit team with a genuine family feel — everyone knows each other, wears multiple hats, and cares about doing right by our patients and each other. As we grow our distributed team of employees and contractors nationwide, we're looking for an experienced HR leader to help us build people practices that are compliant and thoughtful, while preserving the culture that makes Protera a great place to work.

About the Role

Protera Health is seeking an experienced, strategic Part-Time Head of Finance to help guide the company through its next stage of growth. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can operate at both the strategic and operational levels, partnering closely with leadership on financial strategy, payer economics, forecasting, budgeting, and business planning.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in healthcare finance, value-based care, national payer contracting, and the MSO/PC healthcare model, along with the ability to translate complex financial and operational data into clear recommendations and decisions.

What You'll Do

  • Financial Strategy & Business Planning

    • Partner with the executive team to develop and execute Protera Health's financial strategy and growth plans.

    • Build financial models and analyses to support strategic decisions, new market opportunities, partnerships, and investments.

    • Evaluate unit economics, profitability, contribution margins, and the financial implications of different growth strategies.

    • Establish financial KPIs and reporting frameworks that give leadership clear visibility into business performance.

  • Payer Strategy & Contracting

    • Support strategy and financial analysis related to national and regional health plan relationships and payer contracting.

    • Analyze payer contracts, reimbursement structures, incentives, risk arrangements, and financial performance.

    • Develop financial models to evaluate proposed payer agreements and inform negotiation strategy.

    • Partner with leadership and clinical/operations teams to understand the impact of payer terms on overall economics and patient outcomes.

    • Bring practical experience navigating the complexities of healthcare reimbursement and payer-provider relationships.

  • Forecasting & Budgeting

    • Own and improve the company's financial forecasting and budgeting processes.

    • Develop and maintain rolling forecasts across revenue, expenses, cash flow, and operating metrics.

    • Partner with functional leaders to develop budgets and establish financial accountability.

    • Identify trends, risks, and opportunities and translate them into actionable recommendations.

    • Support cash planning, scenario modeling, and longer-term financial planning.

  • MSO / PC Healthcare Model

    • Provide financial leadership within an MSO/PC structure, including an understanding of the financial and operational relationship between the MSO and professional entity.

    • Experience working with physician practices and healthcare organizations operating under an MSO/PC model is required.

    • Understand the financial considerations, reporting requirements, management arrangements, and operational complexities inherent in this structure.

  • Finance Operations & Leadership

    • Work closely with accounting, operations, clinical leadership, and external advisors to ensure accurate and timely financial information.

    • Partner with external accounting and finance resources as needed.

    • Improve financial reporting, dashboards, processes, and controls as the organization scales.

    • Serve as a trusted financial thought partner to the CEO and leadership team.

What We're Looking For

  • 7+ years experience in healthcare finance, preferably in healthcare services, physician practices, value-based care, or healthcare technology/services.

  • Proven experience with national health plans/payors and payer contracting.

  • Direct experience working within an MSO/PC healthcare model is required.

  • Strong experience with financial forecasting, budgeting, financial modeling, and scenario analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand healthcare unit economics, reimbursement, and payer/provider economics.

  • Strategic thinker who can also roll up their sleeves and execute.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly to non-financial stakeholders.

  • Comfortable working in a part-time/fractional capacity on a 1099 contract in a fast-moving healthcare company.

  • Experience with value-based care, risk arrangements, shared savings, or other alternative payment models.

  • Experience supporting a healthcare company through growth, fundraising, market expansion, or organizational scaling.

  • Experience working directly with CEOs and executive teams.

  • Experience building finance functions and processes in an entrepreneurial or growth-stage environment.
