Job description

About FLX Solutions

FLX Solutions, Inc. builds robotic systems that make inspection and maintenance faster, safer, and more repeatable, especially in tight, hard-to-reach spaces.

Our flagship platform, the FLX BOT, is a modular, handheld, snake-like articulating robotic system designed to solve one of the toughest challenges in maintenance: reaching the “last meter” in complex environments. It is already in use with the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, a major DoD prime, and shipbuilders, with expanding applications across industrial, transit, and construction sectors.

The Opportunity

FLX Solutions is at a key inflection point. The FLX BOT technology is already proven, the market is responding, and we have a high-confidence pipeline of over $18M including an upcoming large pilot order from the Navy. This is just the beginning.

We are building the next generation of FLX BOT units for Air Force and Navy programs in our own Bethlehem lab, and we need a Junior Electrical Engineer who can build, bring up, and test the electronics that power them. Our boards are designed by experienced outside design partners and part-time senior engineering mentors. You will be the person in the lab who gets them working.

This is a hands-on role with a strong bias toward doing on day one. You will assemble and rework boards, power them up for the first time, write simple test code, and find out why something doesn’t work. We use AI tools across our engineering work, from test scripts to design reviews, and you will too, with senior engineers reviewing your work and teaching you along the way. As the company scales, there is a clear path to grow into owning more of the hardware design.

If you would rather be at the bench with a soldering iron and a scope than in a meeting, this is your role. If you have built a board, a robot, or a project that actually worked, keep reading.

What You'll Do:

Bring Up, Test, and Validate Hardware:

  • Bring new FLX BOT boards online: assembling, flashing, powering up, and checking each build, including our 48 V motor and power systems, with a senior engineer alongside.
  • Run bench tests on motors, motor drivers, sensors, and power boards, record the results, and track down failures.
  • Write simple bring-up and test code in C/C++ or Python, using AI tools to draft it and your own judgment to check it.
  • Debug boards at the bench and on the robot.

Build and Rework Hardware:

  • Assemble and rework small boards in house: fine-pitch SMD soldering, solder paste and stencils, reflow, and pick-and-place. We will teach you what you don’t know yet.
  • Build wiring harnesses, cables, test fixtures, and component kits for each robot build.
  • Inspect incoming boards and parts, and help with full robot builds and system checkout.

Support the Design Work:

  • Help prepare pin tables, parts checks, wiring diagrams, and review notes with AI tools, then verify them before they go to our design partners.
  • Track parts, lead times, and BOMs so builds don’t wait on missing parts.
  • Keep clear records: test reports, build logs, and revision history.

Grow with the Team:

  • Learn schematic and PCB design from our senior engineering mentors and design partners.
  • Take on more of the hardware design as you build your track record.

Who You Are:

  • An early-career electrical engineer who likes building real hardware and learns fast.
  • Good with your hands: comfortable with a soldering iron, a scope, and a multimeter, and not afraid to rework a board.
  • Someone who understands the basics of embedded systems: microcontrollers, serial interfaces, and reading a schematic.
  • Already using AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, or similar) in your engineering work, with the judgment to tell when the AI is wrong.
  • A collaborative, curious engineer who asks for help early and works hard to get things right.
  • Excited about robotics, real hardware, and shipping systems that work outside the lab, including in demanding DoD and industrial environments.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field (completed, or completing within the next year).
  • 0 to 3 years of professional experience. Internships, co-ops, senior design, and serious personal or team projects count.
  • Hands-on soldering and electronics assembly experience.
  • Comfortable with basic lab equipment: oscilloscopes, DMMs, and bench power supplies.
  • Basic C/C++ or Python, and some experience with microcontrollers (STM32, Arduino, Teensy, or similar).
  • Good documentation habits and clear written and verbal communication.
  • U.S. Citizenship (due to DoD requirements).

Preferred:

  • Fine-pitch SMD soldering and board rework experience.
  • KiCad or Altium experience.
  • Experience with motors, motor drivers, or power electronics.
  • Familiarity with SPI, I2C, UART, or USB.
  • Robotics club, competition team, or hardware projects you can show us.
  • Prior experience in a startup or small hardware team.

Who You’ll Partner With:

  • The CEO on hardware priorities and customer programs.
  • Our Head of Robotics on firmware, controls, and the electrical needs of the robotics stack.
  • Senior engineering mentors and our electronics design partners, who review your work and guide you each week.
  • The mechanical engineering and build team on packaging, interconnects, test fixtures, and system integration.

Company Core Values:

  • Do what you say, say what you do.
  • We all make mistakes; it is what we do afterwards that defines us.
  • Treat all with respect. Period.
  • Leave a situation better than you found it.
  • Just because something has always been done a certain way, doesn’t mean it has to be done that way in the future.

Compensation & Location:

  • Salary: $70K - $110K Competitive for an early-stage company, with performance-based increases tied to company milestones and your expanding responsibilities.
  • Equity: A meaningful, early-stage equity grant. You will be a critical part of our success, and your compensation will reflect that.
  • Location: On-site in Bethlehem, PA, so you can work hands-on in the lab alongside the CEO and engineering team.
  • Travel: Occasional travel to customer sites, pilots, and partner offices.
  • Flexibility: Willing to adapt role and package for the right candidate.
