Access Control Technician Job Description
Location: North Charleston, SC
Territory: Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Florence, Columbia, Augusta, and surrounding areas (approximately 2-hour radius)
Position Type: Contract-to-Hire
Target Pay: $22-$31/hr depending on experience, qualifications, certifications.
About the Opportunity
TEKsystems is partnered with Convergint, one of the nation's leading security systems integrators, to identify a developing Access Control Technician for their Charleston operation. Convergint is experiencing continued project growth and is looking for individuals who possess the right technical foundation, strong work ethic, and desire to build a long-term career in the security and access control industry.
Position Overview
This technician will support commercial security installation projects throughout the Charleston market. The role will involve working alongside experienced project teams installing and supporting access control systems, card readers, door hardware, electronic locking devices, security equipment, and other low voltage technologies.
The ideal candidate understands the basics of wiring and electrical systems, enjoys working with their hands, and is interested in developing expertise within the electronic security industry. This is not a cable-pulling-only position. While some cable installation may occur, the primary focus is working with devices, equipment, and security technologies.
Primary Responsibilities
- Install access control devices including card readers, request-to-exit devices, door contacts, strikes, magnetic locks, and associated hardware.
- Assist with installation and integration of commercial security systems.
- Pull, terminate, label, and test low voltage cabling as required.
- Read and interpret basic drawings, wiring diagrams, and installation documentation.
- Support system testing, troubleshooting, startup, and commissioning activities.
- Troubleshoot wiring issues, device failures, and installation-related problems.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and senior technicians to execute project schedules.
- Maintain a professional presence while working in customer facilities.
- Learn multiple access control and security platforms utilized by Convergint customers.
- Maintain accurate documentation and communicate project status updates when necessary.

- Previous access control installation experience
- Experience with electronic door hardware
- Exposure to Lenel, Genetec, Software House, Openpath, Avigilon, Brivo, or similar platforms
- OSHA 10 certification
- Scissor lift certification
- Experience in commercial construction environments
- Experience supporting integrated security systems
- Customer-facing service experience

- Very familiar with basic blueprints, schematics, manuals, and other specifications to determine installation procedures unassisted.
- Excellent customer focus and ability to work under pressure.
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude (e.g. works with a variety of hand and power tools such as drill, screwdriver, wire stripper, hacksaw, crimper) and ability to read blueprints and drawings; solid math skills.
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Charleston, SC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $31.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
