Location: Onsite (Durham County, NC)

Overview:

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) requires the assistance of a Senior Automation Engineer to help automate and improve the build, deploy, and operation of (NC FAST) Applications.

The primary role is to lead the automation effort of infrastructure provisioning, build and deployment activities for NC FAST applications. This position must demonstrate a solid understanding of AWS infrastructure and the software release life cycle.

The role involves creating and maintaining Ansible playbooks, troubleshooting automation issues, ensuring consistent and reliable deployments across environments, and collaborating with DevOps and application teams to enhance CI/CD workflows. Strong knowledge of Linux, Ansible Tower/AWX, YAML, automation best practices, and infrastructure-as-code principles is required. Experience with debugging deployments, validating configurations, and improving release reliability is a plus.

The position will work with IT management to improve the software engineering processes and practices associated with continuous integration and Continuous deployment (CI/CD) of application changes. This position will interact with the architects, developers, deployment Team, and Database Administrators to ensure automation of various tasks.

This position is required to be on call for evenings and weekends as required to meet business needs.

Required Skills:

• Experience with automating Linux OS and software patches and upgrades across multiple environments using automation tools like Ansible.
• Hands-on experience (like branching, merging, configuring, and administering) with Bitbucket or GIT Source Code Management tool
• Hands-on experience in automating the build/deploy process, including changes to the database, using tools like Ansible
• Experience developing automation scripts, operational utilities, and workflow scripts using Python/Bash/Shell
• Experience building and packaging applications with Docker, and managing and scaling containerized workloads using Kubernetes
• Experience in infrastructure provisioning, configuration, and environment management using Terraform and Ansible
• Hands-on experience developing and managing CI/CD (DevOps) pipelines using tools like TeamCity, Jenkins, and Ansible

Desired Skills:

• Strong knowledge and understanding of Amazon Web Services and infrastructure
