When did a breakdown last ruin your evening? If the answer stings, read on — because this field engineering job has no call-outs, no weekends and no reactive work at all. Everything is planned weeks ahead, on some of the most advanced electrical technology in the UK power industry.

The work
Installing, surveying and maintaining intelligent monitoring systems across the UK's high-voltage electricity network — the equipment that spots a failing asset months before it fails. It's proper diagnostic engineering for major energy operators, with a specialist that designs and builds its own technology and has a multi-year national programme ahead of it. You'll be away overnight roughly half the time, midweek only, and home every single weekend.

What you'll need

• An industrial or commercial engineering background with an electrical bias
• The instinct to find the cause of a fault, not just record it
• Comfort with regular midweek travel
• A full UK driving licence and willingness to complete background checks for network sites
