What’s the Metadata Enablement team in our Technology Division? At a time when technology is creating new business models, disrupting industries and creating valuable experiences for consumers, our role as technology team members must elevate an organization through innovative transformation, modernized technology and delivery of new business strategies, including an aim to continuously evolve and enhance the customer experience. As an intern, you'll gain hands-on experience building prototypes, automation tools, and lightweight integrations that reduce manual effort and accelerate experimentation. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers and data professionals while contributing to foundational capabilities that support data governance and data-driven decision making.

What projects might I support? Although subject to change, examples of projects you will be contributing to include:

• Collaborate with leaders, engineers, and team members across Wellmark to contribute to meaningful projects, build professional relationships, and gain exposure to multiple business and technology functions.
• Develop automation solutions and tooling that improve metadata collection, enrichment, and management processes.
• Support the design and enhancement of data product publishing workflows to streamline delivery and improve efficiency.
• Build reporting and monitoring capabilities that measure metadata completeness, quality, and adoption.
• Create prototypes and lightweight integrations between data platforms and metadata services to improve data discovery and accessibility.
• Collaborate with engineers, product teams, and business stakeholders to identify opportunities for automation and innovation.

This internship will start in May of 2027, working a hybrid schedule from our headquarters in Des Moines.

• Current junior, senior or master’s student pursing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, MIS, Data Science, Software Engineering or related field.
• Experience or exposure in software development technologies (Python, JavaScript, NodeJS, Angular, .NET, SQL). 
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills with a high attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and collaboration tools such as Teams.

Preferred:

• Previous internship, co-op, or campus leadership role.
• Experience with scripting, automation, or API integrations.
• Familiarity with data management, data engineering, or metadata concepts.
• Understanding of cloud platforms, databases, or data pipelines.
• Awareness of secure coding practices and responsible handling of sensitive or regulated data.
