Job description

This Project drives the Royal Navy’s capability by delivering digital solutions that increase operational efficiency, effectiveness, and availability. Operating across Official and Secret domains, from shore to sea.

Data & Navy Applications (DNA) provides end-to-end support for bespoke and procured applications.

Environments Manager

We are seeking an experienced Environments Manager to oversee, govern, and optimize our end-to-end software environments (Development, Testing, UAT, Staging, and Production). In this role, you will act as the central point of contact for all environment-related initiatives, ensuring our engineering teams have reliable, secure, and cost-effective environments to build and deploy exceptional software.

The position requires a platform and technology agnostic approach, encompassing governance and support across all DNA development environments; including D2S, DNH, AHE(N), and Power Platform, as well as any future platforms established within the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Current State Assessment - Create a complete inventory of environments, owners, administrators, support arrangements and lifecycle status.
  • Define clear ownership, approval routes, accountability and decision-making processes for environment management.
  • Review privileged access, implement role-based permissions and ensure compliance with security and audit requirements.
  • Establish ownership of environment costs, funding approval processes and ongoing financial reporting.
  • Introduce standard processes for environment creation, onboarding, change, support, review and decommissioning.
  • Develop dashboards, KPIs and risk reporting to provide visibility of environment health, compliance and costs.
  • Partner with other teams to ensure environments meet project requirements and are delivered on time without bottlenecking the CI/CD pipeline.
  • Act as an escalation point for environment-related outages or performance degradation, coordinating rapid resolution and conducting root-cause analysis.
  • Champion automation (e.g. Infrastructure as Code) and self-service capabilities to streamline environment provisioning and reduce manual toil.
  • Work closely with cloud providers (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and third-party tooling vendors to optimise performance and licensing.

Must haves:

  • Proven track record in IT Environment Management, Release Management, or IT Operations within a software house, SaaS provider, or technology-driven organization.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-native infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience implementing ITIL or similar frameworks, managing RBAC (Role-Based Access Control), and enforcing compliance in software environments.
  • Solid understanding of cloud cost management, forecasting, and budget optimization for infrastructure.
  • Ability to analyze complex data to produce actionable Management Information and executive dashboards.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, capable of negotiating and communicating clearly with both highly technical engineers and senior business leaders.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience in MOD or defence
