Job Description

Senior Software Engineer - Rust (Embedded & Cyber Systems) Job Summary Our client is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep expertise in Rust to support the design, development, and modernization of mission-critical embedded and cyber systems. In this role, you will lead the adoption of Rust across software development initiatives, help modernize legacy C/C++ applications, and drive the implementation of secure, high-performance, memory-safe solutions. You will work closely with software engineers, systems engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders throughout the full software development lifecycle to develop innovative solutions supporting advanced defense and cyber technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation and adoption of Rust across embedded software development programs.
  • Guide the migration and modernization of legacy C/C++ applications into Rust-based architectures.
  • Provide technical leadership on Rust development best practices, performance optimization, and memory-safe software design.
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software applications and system components.
  • Translate customer and system requirements into scalable, maintainable software solutions.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, and systems engineering teams on system architecture and integration activities.
  • Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), including requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, testing, deployment, and sustainment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex software and system issues independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, software design artifacts, test plans, and test procedures.
  • Utilize modeling, simulation, prototyping, and testing methodologies to validate software and system performance.
  • Conduct code reviews, support defect resolution efforts, and ensure delivery of high-quality software products.
  • Contribute to Agile/Scrum teams by participating in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and continuous improvement initiatives. Required Qualifications
Education & Experience One of the following combinations is required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field with 6+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Master's degree in a related field with 4+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • 10+ years of relevant software engineering experience in lieu of a degreeTechnical Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional experience developing production software using Rust
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++
  • Experience developing software for embedded systems, real-time systems, or low-level platform environments
  • Strong knowledge of memory safety, concurrency, and performance optimization concepts
  • Experience migrating or integrating legacy C/C++ codebases into Rust
  • Experience working across the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies, including ScrumLeadership & Collaboration
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, or establishing software engineering best practices
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional engineering teams and stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with embedded Linux, Board Support Packages (BSPs), device drivers, or real-time operating systems (RTOS)
  • Familiarity with hardware/software integration and system-level architecture
  • Experience using modeling and systems engineering tools such as IBM Rhapsody, Cameo, or MagicDraw
  • Experience with Python or additional modern programming languages
  • Knowledge of secure software development, cryptography, cybersecurity, or Information Assurance principles
  • Experience supporting highly regulated or mission-critical systems
  • Familiarity with standards or certifications such as NSA Type 1, DO-178, or similar environments Security Clearance Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance required
