The Position

James Walker and Co Ltd are looking to recruit a Metrology & Measurement Systems Engineer to support the Quality Team at the manufacturing site in Cockermouth, Cumbria. Key focus of role is to ensure all measurement data used on product conformity is accurate and to drive improvement within inspection.

This is a 2 year contract with a 3 month rolling notice period.


Key responsibilities

Ensure measurement systems are fit for purpose (resolution, repeatability, accuracy).

Conduct MSA studies.

Evaluate measurement variation and its impact on product quality.

Analyse measurement data to assess process capability (Cp, Cpk).

Work with production teams to ensure reliable in-process measurement.

Troubleshoot measurement issues affecting yields or scrap rates.

Support root cause analysis for defects linked to measurement error.

Define inspection plans and quality control strategies.

Develop procedures, work instructions, and technical documentation.

Implement automated inspection systems and inline metrology.

Use software for data acquisition, reporting, and analysis.

Introduce new technologies (e.g., vision systems, laser scanning).


The successful candidate must have:

Proven background in the use of statistical tools (Minitab, SPC software).

Experience with measurement equipment (CMM, micrometers, vision systems).

Strong understanding of metrology principles.

Excellent communication and leadership skills along with the ability to build great relationships.

The willingness and enthusiasm to embrace change and look at new ways of working and support continuous improvement initiatives and projects.

Knowledge of uncertainty analysis and calibration standards.

Excellent IT Skills and proficient in all Microsoft Applications.

Self-motivated to achieve targets.


Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline.

Six Sigma Green or Black belt.

Lean Manufacturing certifications.
