Reports to: Manager, Defect Engineering
Location: Lansing, MI

Summary:
The Defect Engineer I identifies battery cell defects caused by contamination and reduce them through equipment and procedural improvements. The individual in this role will drive a focus on quality and continuous improvement in our li-ion battery cell manufacturing clean room.
Responsibilities:
- Implement improvements that reduce foreign particles using a structured problem-solving approach, such as lean Six Sigma, including:
- Using complex equipment such as scanning electron microscopes (SEM)
- Identifying the root cause (source of contamination) in the production process
- Designing, prototyping (including 3D printing) and piloting improvements
- Verifying that improvements are effective
- Standardizing improvements and communicating them with others both written and verbally
- Train production team members on best practices and process changes
- Collaborate with other teams (e.g. Production, Quality, etc.) to resolve internal and external quality issues
- Engage in weekly meeting with the production team to review and plan
- Participate in large-scale planning or installation projects as needed
- Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions
- Aid in the design the testing or control of processing procedures
- Monitor material performance, and evaluate any quality issues
- Conduct or oversee tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure their quality
- Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives
- Maintain cleanliness at work-site in accordance with 5S3R Standards:
- Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain
- Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required, MBA or MS preferred, or equivalent, relevant experience
- Lean Six Sigma (LSS) certification
Experience:
- 0-3 years of experience in engineering problem solving, with an emphasis on hands-on continuous improvement implementation
- Materials and mechanical engineering
- Manufacturing experience
- Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- CAD Design
Skills:

- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Project and process management skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Technically proficient and motivated to continuously improve
