HSE Advisor

The opportunity

Downer Energy and Utilities is seeking an experienced Health and Safety Advisor to support our Water operations.

This is a predominantly field based role where you will work alongside project leaders, supervisors and frontline crews to strengthen safety performance and operational ownership. You will provide practical health and safety advice and coaching, undertake risk based assurance activities, verify critical controls and help ensure work is planned and delivered safely.

Your key responsibilities will include

• Conducting field inspections and observations with a focus on high risk work and critical controls
• Verifying permits, isolations, Safe Work Method Statements and other controls are effective at the point of work
• Coaching supervisors and crews on pre starts, hazard management, inspections and task risk assessments
• Supporting incident response, investigations and corrective actions and sharing relevant learnings with teams
• Providing health and safety input into project planning, risk assessments, change management and high risk work reviews
• Checking licences, competencies, inductions and emergency arrangements ahead of mobilisation
• Maintaining accurate assurance, incident and action records and providing clear updates on emerging risks and trend

What we’re looking for

You will bring practical health and safety experience gained within construction, utilities, maintenance or a similarly operational environment. You will be comfortable spending time in the field and building effective working relationships while being prepared to constructively challenge and escalate safety issues when required.

You will also bring

• Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety or equivalent
• Current driver licence
• Working knowledge of relevant work health and safety legislation, codes and standards
• Experience with field assurance, critical risk controls, incident response and workforce consultation
• Ability to interpret risk assessments, Safe Work Method Statements, permits and competency evidence
• Strong communication, coaching and stakeholder engagement skills
• Sound digital literacy including Microsoft 365 and health and safety reporting systems
• A Diploma in Work Health and Safety or related discipline would be advantageous, as would qualifications in incident investigation, internal auditing, first aid or training.
