The Opportunity:
Shape the World Around You - As a Structural Technologist / Inspector with our Bridges & Civil Structures team, you will help deliver bridge, culvert, retaining wall, and other civil structure projects across Ontario. This is a hands-on role that combines 2D CAD production, structural inspection, field documentation, and construction support.
Based in our Ottawa (Queensview) office, you will collaborate with engineers, technologists, inspectors, BIM specialists, and project managers. Your work will shift between office-based drafting and reporting and field assignments that may require prolonged periods outdoors or on active construction sites. The successful candidate will be comfortable adapting to changing site, weather, access, and travel conditions while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality.
Your Impact
- Prepare and revise accurate 2D engineering drawings for bridges, culverts, retaining walls, structural rehabilitations, and other civil structures using AutoCAD and related drafting tools.
- Develop plans, elevations, sections, details, quantity information, and record or as-built drawings from engineering markups, field measurements, survey information, photographs, and existing records.
- Apply project-specific CAD standards, file management requirements, drawing conventions, quality procedures, and digital delivery protocols.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and senior technologists to coordinate structural drawings with civil, transportation, geotechnical, environmental, utility, and other disciplines.
- Participate in inspections of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other structures, including condition surveys, construction inspections, and specialized field assignments under the direction of experienced staff.
- Observe, measure, photograph, and document deterioration, construction progress, site conditions, and deficiencies using field forms, sketches, digital tools, and report templates.
- Assist with preparation of inspection reports, field review records, deficiency lists, quantities, cost estimates, specifications, tender documents, and construction administration records.
- Review drawings, specifications, and contract documents to support field inspections and confirm that observed work is documented against project requirements.
- Communicate professionally with project team members, clients, contractors, site representatives, and the public, escalating technical or safety concerns promptly.
- Plan and support field logistics, including travel, equipment preparation, access coordination, traffic or site constraints, and safe work planning.
- Follow WSP health and safety, quality, environmental, and project delivery procedures in both office and field settings.
- Contribute ideas that improve drafting efficiency, inspection documentation, digital workflows, and consistency across project deliverables.
The Skills That Set You Apart
- You have completed a college diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technician, Structural Engineering Technology, Transportation Engineering Technology, or a closely related program.
- You are eligible for certification with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) as a Certified Technician (C.Tech.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.), or you are actively working toward certification.
You hold a valid Ontario driver’s licence and are able to travel to project sites. Access to a vehicle may be required for some assignments.
CAD, Digital Delivery & Technical Skills
- You are able to produce clear, accurate, and well-organized 2D CAD drawings. Practical experience with Autodesk AutoCAD is required; experience with Civil 3D or MicroStation is an asset.
- You understand drafting fundamentals, including plans, elevations, sections, details, dimensions, scales, layers, references, annotation, and drawing coordination.
- Experience preparing structural steel, reinforced concrete, precast concrete, masonry, or rehabilitation drawings is considered an asset.
- Experience with 3D BIM or model-based delivery using Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar platforms is considered an asset, but is not required.
- You can interpret engineering drawings, specifications, field sketches, survey information, and contract documents.
- You are comfortable using Microsoft 365 applications and digital field tools to organize photographs, measurements, markups, inspection records, and reports.
You have strong attention to detail and an interest in developing your knowledge of bridge components, construction materials, deterioration mechanisms, and rehabilitation methods.
Inspection & Field Experience
- You have inspection, construction, field review, materials testing, surveying, or related site experience. Experience inspecting bridges, culverts, retaining walls, or other transportation structures is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM), MTO practices, municipal inspection requirements, or construction contract administration is considered an asset.
- You are comfortable working outdoors and on active sites for prolonged periods, including in variable weather, around traffic, on uneven terrain, and in physically demanding or constrained-access environments, with appropriate training, equipment, and safe work procedures.
- You are willing and able to travel within Ontario and occasionally elsewhere in Canada, work flexible hours when project or site conditions require it, and undertake occasional overnight assignments.
- You are able to carry and use typical inspection equipment and personal protective equipment and to perform field activities such as walking, standing, climbing stairs or ladders, taking measurements, and accessing structure components, subject to project-specific requirements and accommodations.
Working at Heights, MTO OSIM Bridge Inspection Workshop, traffic control, confined space, first aid, railway safety, drone, or rope access training would be considered an asset, where relevant to assigned work.
Communication, Judgment & Teamwork
- You communicate clearly and professionally in writing and in person and can prepare concise field notes, inspection records, drawing markups, and technical report content.
- You are organized, dependable, safety-conscious, and able to manage changing priorities between office and field assignments.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French is considered an asset for work in the National Capital Region.
