Job Description:
Sitework Designer II / III (Substation Projects)

Location: Alabama or Mississippi (Must reside within service territory)

Travel: Approximately 25% to project sites and Birmingham office meetings

Work Arrangement: Hybrid/Flexible, with periodic onsite requirements

Pay Rate: Up to $40/hr (Level II) | Up to $44.50/hr (Level III)
About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Sitework Designer II or III to support the design and development of electrical substation projects across Alabama and Mississippi. This role is ideal for a designer with strong experience in Civil 3D, site grading, and stormwater/drainage design who enjoys collaborating with engineering teams and traveling to project sites throughout the region.

The selected candidate will be responsible for preparing detailed sitework design packages, developing grading and drainage plans, creating 3D models, and supporting engineering teams through project development and execution.

Because this position involves frequent travel to substations and in-person meetings, candidates must live within Alabama or Mississippi.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed sitework design packages for utility and substation projects
  • Create and maintain Civil 3D models, design drawings, and construction documents
  • Prepare site grading plans, stormwater management designs, drainage layouts, and erosion control plans
  • Support site development activities from conceptual design through construction
  • Coordinate with civil engineers, project managers, contractors, and external vendors
  • Review vendor drawings and engineering deliverables for accuracy and constructability
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and assist with project cost estimating
  • Conduct site visits and field investigations as required
  • Ensure designs meet applicable local, state, and environmental regulatory requirements


Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of drafting/design experience in civil, site development, utility, or related projects
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D (required)
  • Demonstrated experience preparing:
    • Site grading plans
    • Stormwater/drainage designs
    • Earthwork and site development drawings
  • Experience producing construction drawings and 3D design models
  • Strong understanding of civil/site design principles and industry standards
  • Ability to travel to project sites and attend meetings in Birmingham as needed
  • Must currently reside within Alabama or Mississippi


Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical degree, Associate's degree, or equivalent design/drafting education
  • Utility, power delivery, transmission, distribution, or substation project experience
  • Familiarity with environmental and permitting requirements, including ADEM, MDEQ, and other regional regulatory agencies
  • Experience supporting large infrastructure, industrial, or energy projects
