Systems Engineer II Systems Integration & Interoperability (Health IT/EHR)

Job Summary

We are seeking a Systems Engineer II Systems Integration & Interoperability to support the modernization of enterprise Health IT solutions for the Indian Health Service (IHS). The ideal candidate will have experience in systems integration, healthcare interoperability, EHR environments, cloud-based data platforms, and Health IT modernization.

This role will support the design, implementation, testing, deployment, and sustainment of enterprise Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, cloud-based clinical data repositories, and healthcare interoperability initiatives. The engineer will work closely with clinical stakeholders, technical teams, vendors, cybersecurity personnel, and program leadership to ensure secure, scalable, and reliable healthcare technology solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Systems Integration & EHR Support

• Support the design, integration, deployment, and sustainment of enterprise Health IT and Electronic Health Record (EHR) solutions.
• Translate clinical, business, and operational requirements into technical specifications.
• Assist in implementing scalable cloud-based healthcare solutions.
• Identify dependencies between applications, systems, interfaces, and infrastructure.
• Support system integration planning, scheduling, and implementation activities.

Healthcare Interoperability

• Support enterprise interoperability initiatives across healthcare systems.
• Develop, review, and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
• Document interface requirements, dependencies, and implementation status.
• Maintain interface inventories and lifecycle documentation.
• Support healthcare data exchange using standards such as:
  • HL7
  • FHIR
  • Health Information Exchange (HIE)
  • Direct Secure Messaging (DSM)
• Support integrations with:
  • Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
  • Pharmacy Systems
  • Medical Imaging Systems
  • Dental Systems
  • Revenue Cycle Applications
  • Patient Portals

Cloud & Data Management

• Support cloud-based healthcare data repositories.
• Assist with migration and maintenance of clinical and operational data.
• Ensure data integrity, validation, and standardization across integrated systems.
• Maintain engineering documentation, configuration records, and repositories.

Testing & Validation

• Participate in functional testing, system validation, and operational readiness activities.
• Develop and execute test cases.
• Track defects and coordinate issue resolution.
• Support test readiness reviews and production deployments.
• Document testing outcomes and implementation findings.

Operational & Stakeholder Support

• Collaborate with engineering, cybersecurity, deployment, product, vendor, and clinical teams.
• Coordinate technical discussions with business and clinical stakeholders.
• Support deployment readiness assessments and go-live activities.
• Provide Level-2 technical support for application, interface, and integration issues.
• Participate in change management and engineering governance activities.

Risk & Issue Management

• Identify and document technical risks and mitigation plans.
• Prepare engineering status reports and project updates.
• Escalate critical technical issues when necessary.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in:

  • Health Informatics
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Or related technical discipline
• 2 5 years of experience supporting:
  • Systems Engineering
  • Systems Integration
  • Health IT
  • Enterprise Applications
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR)
• Experience documenting technical requirements and testing activities.
• Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
• Experience supporting enterprise application implementation or modernization projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Healthcare IT or Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience.
• Experience supporting Federal Healthcare or Government IT programs.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms and secure healthcare environments.
• Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards.
• Experience supporting enterprise modernization initiatives.
• Experience working with cross-functional technical and business teams.
