The Role As a Java Software Engineer, you will join a close-knit team building high-quality software solutions, reporting to the Head of Engineering. You will work directly with clients to agree technical designs, advise on estimated effort, and help shape the technical direction of user stories and journeys. Expect a fast-paced environment where sound, reasoned decisions are the norm rather than the exception. You will also mentor colleagues and share knowledge as you go, while continuing to develop your own skills alongside experienced engineers. Key Responsibilities Design and deliver high-quality Java-based solutions within a microservices architecture Collaborate directly with clients to agree technical designs and implementation approach Advise clients and managers on estimated effort and the technical implications of new user stories Build and maintain Spring Boot services that meet performance and scalability requirements Contribute to architecture decisions across the wider engineering team Mentor and share knowledge with fellow engineers as part of daily practice Apply testing disciplines, including TDD, automated acceptance testing and performance testing, to protect quality Deploy and support production services using AWS infrastructure Make sound, reasoned technical decisions independently in a fast-paced environment What You'll Need Essential: 3-5 years' commercial Java experience Practical experience with Spring Boot Solid understanding of microservices architecture Experience in three or more of: TDD, automated acceptance testing / BDD / Cucumber, performance and scalability testing (e.g. JMeter), penetration testing knowledge / OWASP, Kubernetes or container orchestration, designing and calling HTTP APIs, SQL databases (e.g. Postgres, MySQL, MariaDB) Experience with three or more AWS services (e.g. EC2, RDS, S3, Route 53, Elasticsearch, EKS, CloudWatch, CloudFront) Comfortable working independently within a collaborative team Desirable / Nice to Have: CI/CD pipeline setup and configuration Apache Kafka Spring Security and OAuth2 flows Why Apply? £40,000 - £50,000 salary, depending on experience Hybrid working from Belfast, office collaboration without the daily commute 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays Pension contribution and private healthcare Dedicated budget for ongoing professional development Direct client exposure and a real say in technical direction from day one A mentorship-driven team where senior engineers invest time in your growth Next Steps Interested in finding out more?
