Position Overview



  • We are seeking an experienced Transmission Line Principal Engineer to manage the design and engineering of assigned transmission generation tie lines supporting wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects, as well as stand-alone transmission line projects.

  • The Transmission Line Principal Engineer will work within an Engineering & Construction organization and oversee transmission line projects from early-stage development and conceptual design through construction and commissioning.

  • The role will manage engineering consultants responsible for transmission line design and coordinate with project development, construction, permitting, supply chain, and other technical stakeholders. This position is focused specifically on transmission line engineering; other technical teams may manage substation design, power systems analysis, protection and control, and related disciplines.




Key Responsibilities

Project Engineering & Design Management



  • Manage transmission line engineering and design activities from project conception through construction and commissioning.

  • Provide technical direction and oversight to external engineering consultants.

  • Establish project engineering requirements, scope, design criteria, and technical deliverables.

  • Review and coordinate engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable standards, and quality expectations.

  • Support projects involving renewable generation interconnections, including wind, solar, and battery energy storage facilities.

  • Manage transmission line design activities for both generation tie lines and stand-alone transmission projects.


Early-Stage Project Development



  • Work with project development and early-stage project management teams to define project requirements and scope.

  • Support development of transmission projects, including competitive transmission proposals and greenfield development opportunities.

  • Provide technical input to project feasibility evaluations and preliminary engineering activities.

  • Support development of scope assumptions for project cost estimates.


Engineering Consultant Management



  • Develop scopes of work for engineering and technical services.

  • Support the sourcing, evaluation, selection, and contracting of engineering consultants and technical service providers.

  • Manage consultant performance, schedules, technical deliverables, and engineering quality.

  • Coordinate engineering resources throughout the project lifecycle.


Routing, Survey & Permitting Support



  • Coordinate with project stakeholders to develop and secure appropriate transmission line routes.

  • Support collection and validation of engineering data required for transmission line design and construction.

  • Coordinate activities involving:

  • Geotechnical investigations

  • Land surveying

  • LiDAR data

  • Environmental and permitting requirements

  • Engineering studies and design services

  • Support the selection and coordination of qualified technical and construction service providers.


Engineering Deliverables



  • Coordinate engineering deliverables supporting competitive proposals, procurement, construction, and project execution.

  • Review and manage deliverables including:

  • Issued for Bid (IFB) drawings

  • Issued for Procurement (IFP) drawings

  • Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings

  • As-Built drawings

  • Design criteria

  • Technical specifications

  • Proposal and RFP documentation

  • Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, complete, and delivered according to project schedules.


Project Coordination & Stakeholder Management



  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, development, procurement, permitting, and other project stakeholders.

  • Represent the engineering organization on assigned projects.

  • Provide technical presentations and project briefings to management and project stakeholders.

  • Communicate project progress, technical issues, risks, and mitigation strategies.

  • Identify potential project risks and develop practical solutions to maintain project schedule, cost, quality, and performance objectives.


Technical Leadership



  • Provide technical leadership throughout the transmission line project lifecycle.

  • Apply value-engineering principles to optimize project design and execution.

  • Ensure design quality and compliance with applicable engineering standards.

  • Provide analytical and problem-solving support for complex transmission engineering issues.

  • Mentor engineers and other technical personnel as appropriate.




Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering.

  • Minimum 7 years of direct experience in the development, design, engineering, and construction of high-voltage transmission line projects.

  • Strong knowledge of transmission line design and engineering principles.

  • Strong project management and coordination skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to provide value engineering and ensure engineering design quality.

  • Ability to interpret and understand:

  • One-line diagrams

  • Three-line diagrams

  • General arrangement drawings

  • Plan and profile drawings

  • Transmission line design documents

  • Other common engineering deliverables

  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout North America as required.




Preferred Qualifications



  • Project Engineering experience.

  • Project Management experience.

  • Strong ability to take ownership and drive projects forward.

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in a related discipline.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.




Experience with industry-standard engineering and project management tools, including:



  • PLS-CADD

  • AutoCAD

  • MS Office / MS 365

  • Primavera or similar scheduling software

  • Other transmission engineering and project management applications
