Job Description
General program information and/or position overview
The National Air Space Integration Support Contract IV (NISC IV) program at Leidos is seeking a Structural Engineer to join our engineering team supporting a critical modernization program for the National Airspace System (NAS). In this role, you will be the structural authority responsible for verifying that facility infrastructure can safely support the deployment of heavy industrial equipment, specifically DC battery banks and DC bus systems, across critical aviation facilities.
You will bridge the gap between field data and engineering execution-reviewing site surveys, verifying structural integrity against stringent building codes, and collaborating on project scheduling and planning to ensure seamless deployment.

Primary Responsibilities
- Structural Analysis & Verification: Review site surveys, geotechnical data, and existing structural engineering reports to evaluate the load-bearing capacity of floors, roofs, and framing systems intended for heavy DC battery plants and distribution equipment.
- Code Compliance & Quality Assurance: Ensure all modifications, additions, and installations strictly comply with the International Building Code (IBC), ASCE 7, OSHA, and relevant FAA standard orders or criteria.
- Drawing & Design Review: Critically review structural construction drawings, equipment anchoring designs, and installation details. Provide professional feedback, markups, and approvals.
- Project Planning & Scheduling: Collaborate with project managers and technical leads to develop realistic engineering schedules, define project scopes, and identify structural risks or bottlenecks early in the planning phase.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the structural subject matter expert (SME) in interdisciplinary meetings, coordinating closely with electrical engineering teams (DCBattery/DCBUS groups), site inspectors, and program stakeholders.
Basic Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Experience: 4 to 8 years of progressive experience in structural analysis, structural steel design, and concrete slab evaluation.
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong understanding of dead/live load distributions, seismic bracing/anchoring requirements for heavy industrial equipment, and structural dynamics.
- Proficiency with structural analysis software (e.g., STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, or similar) and AutoCAD/Revit for drawing reviews.
- Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; comfortable translating complex structural constraints to non-structural team members.
- Clearance: Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance required for FAA facility access.
- Adaptable: Position will require candidate to work on various tasks as program needs require. Examples include but are not limited to the following:
- Funding request
- Operational Risk Management Plan (ORMP)
- Hydrogen Calculations
- Document review/edit
- Working knowledge and proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office applications to include: MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and MS Power Point.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on FAA programs or within the National Airspace System (NAS) environment.
- Familiarity with facilities housing critical infrastructure, such as data centers, telecommunications hubs, or power substations.
- Project Skills: Proven ability to read and interpret complex engineering schedules (e.g., Primavera P6 or MS Project) and contribute to high-level project staging and planning.
