The Mission - Why This Program, Why Now?
We are at a defining moment in one of the most significant technology programmes Australia has ever undertaken. This programme will build and operate the dedicated cloud that gives Australia's national security community and its allies the capability to see more, share more, innovate, and act faster than ever before.
As a Systems Engineer within our Region Services team, you will be redefining how AWS designs, builds, and operates cloud regions, enabling new infrastructure and services offerings that serve customers across every industry, from ambitious start ups to the public sector organisations safeguarding our nation.
Key job responsibilitiesOwn the full engineering lifecycle of Route 53's DNS infrastructure within this programme - from initial architecture through to operational excellence at scale. Your core mission is designing and implementing DNS solutions that leverage Route 53's advanced capabilities, including latency based routing, Private DNS configurations, Geo DNS routing, and failover architectures that ensure zero downtime when it matters most.
Write production quality code daily, building automation frameworks, developing monitoring systems, and creating tooling to multiply the team's effectiveness. Integrate Route 53 with the broader AWS ecosystem, collaborate across teams to ensure seamless interoperability, and participate in architectural reviews.
Build and refine runbooks, lead incident response with calm expertise, conduct root cause analyses to prevent recurrence, and continuously raise the bar for system reliability. Mentor teammates, share knowledge generously, and help build a culture where engineering excellence is the baseline, not the aspiration.
A day in the lifeStart your day reviewing overnight metrics dashboards, noting subtle shifts in query patterns, and investigating further. Mid morning, collaborate in design sessions to sketch new Geo DNS architectures, balancing performance, sovereignty, security, and scale. After lunch, focus on automation code that reduces DNS change propagation time, ensuring every function is clean and every test passes green before moving through the CI/CD pipeline.
In the afternoon, participate in a cross team integration session, weaving Route 53 health checks into another team's monitoring framework. Share complex DNS concepts clearly, draw architecture diagrams that illuminate rather than confuse, and ensure the broader system is more resilient thanks to your contribution.
