Job Description

Job Description

SEDA is experiencing strong growth and seeks an experienced Software and Firmware Engineer to lead the design, development, integration, verification, and maintenance of embedded firmware and low level software supporting missile seeker and gimbal products. The role reports to the Head of Engineering and is responsible for developing real time software running on ARM and GPU based processors, interfacing with sensors, actuators, inertial measurement units, imaging systems, motor controllers, and supporting electronics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop and maintain embedded firmware for EO/IR sensors, AI engines for optronics and track management software products.
  • Develop software in C and C++ for ARM based microprocessors and microcontrollers.
  • Develop target detection, tracking and classification algorithms and commercial grade software using ARM and/or GPU based processors.
  • Support development of engineering tools, test applications and integration utilities using C# where appropriate.
  • Implement interfaces to sensors, inertial measurement units (IMUs), encoders, resolvers, cameras and actuator systems.
  • Develop software supporting line of sight stabilization, tracking and guidance functions in conjunction with GNC engineers.
  • Implement real time control, data acquisition and signal processing functions.
  • Develop low level device drivers, board support packages and hardware abstraction layer.
  • Integrate firmware with FPGA, electronics and hardware subsystems.
Candidate Attributes
  • Solid planning skills and stakeholder engagement.
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to manage technical requirements and ensure their integration across multiple project areas.
  • Must display initiative and be proactive in seeking solutions.
  • Well developed problem solving skills and an analytical mind.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi task.
  • Strong customer service ethic and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain superior customer relationships.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work autonomously as well as within a team environment.
  • Interest in advanced defence technologies.
Job Requirements
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence security clearance to Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) as a minimum.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem solving skills, with the intellectual rigour to make and defend architectural decisions.
  • Technically authoritative, confident in holding and defending positions under challenge from customers, subcontractors, or parent company counterparts.
  • Proactive and anticipatory, able to identify technical risks before they impact program outcomes.
  • Effective at directing and developing engineers without relying on direct line management authority.
  • Collaborative and constructive in working across organisational and national boundaries.
  • Maintains high standards for documentation quality and engineering process discipline.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Typically 10+ years of embedded software development experience.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in embedded systems or software engineering are advantageous; additional postgraduate studies in control systems, aerospace engineering, or related fields are desirable.
  • Proven experience in taking products from prototype through to commercial delivery and field deployment (not just prototype delivery).
  • Demonstrated ability to define system architecture, allocate functions across engineering domains, and manage inter domain interfaces.
  • Experience in establishing and implementing verification & validation (V&V) programs, including the development of Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP/ATProcs) and formal acceptance processes with Defence or commercial clients.
