Software Engineering Consultant

Software Development Consultant - Coaching - AI Adoption - 12 month contract - Edinburgh - outside IR35

I am looking for a hands-on Software Engineering Consultant to coach multiple software teams for our client in Edinburgh.

You will help modernise engineering practices and embed responsible AI-assisted development. This is a hands-on role working with product and enablement teams to strengthen delivery, reduce risk and improve developer experience across a wide range of digital services.

I am therefore keen to speak with candidates who have

• Strong enthusiasm for software engineering and for helping teams build secure, resilient and maintainable services.
• Significant hands-on software engineering and technical leadership in modern, cloud-based delivery environments.
• Proven experience coaching and mentoring multiple agile delivery teams with different levels of maturity.
• Track record of improving developer experience, productivity and delivery quality through standards, tooling, automation and platform capabilities.
• Experience introducing or supporting AI-assisted software development with an understanding of responsible adoption, practical use cases and measurable value.
• Ability to identify and reduce technical debt, security, service resilience and knowledge-concentration risks.
• Experience building communities of practice and facilitating workshops, learning and knowledge transfer across teams.
• Strong working knowledge of continuous delivery, cloud-native engineering, infrastructure as code, automated testing, observability, secure software development and service resilience.
• Practical experience with AWS, GitLab or similar CI/CD platforms, APIs, containers and at least one of Java, Python, TypeScript or JavaScript.
• Working knowledge of large language models and AI-assisted engineering tools, including their limitations, risks and operating considerations.

Desirable experience includes AI platforms such as AWS SageMaker, MLOps and AI governance, platform engineering and developer portals, Kubernetes and related tooling, and work on public sector digital delivery or technology modernisation.
