Job Description

Apigee / API Management Architect

Experience

Typically 8–15+ years in software integration, API management, cloud architecture, or enterprise architecture, with strong hands-on experience in Apigee.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement enterprise-wide API management architecture using Apigee.
  • Define API standards, governance, lifecycle management, versioning, and reusable API patterns.
  • Design API proxy architectures between consumer applications and backend systems.
  • Implement OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, API keys, mTLS, threat protection, and other API security patterns.
  • Design Apigee policies for:
    • Authentication/authorization
    • Rate limiting and quotas
    • Spike arrest
    • Caching
    • Request/response transformation
    • Fault handling
    • Service callouts
    • Message logging
  • Architect integrations with microservices, legacy systems, SaaS platforms, databases, and cloud services.
  • Design Apigee hybrid deployments and networking patterns where required. Apigee hybrid places the runtime plane in the customer's Kubernetes environment while the management plane is managed by Google.
  • Design north-south and east-west API traffic flows, including load balancing, VPC connectivity, Private Service Connect, DNS, TLS, and firewall requirements.
  • Define API products, developer onboarding, developer portal strategy, and API consumption models.
  • Establish API monitoring, logging, analytics, alerting, and operational dashboards.
  • Define CI/CD architecture for Apigee using Git, Maven, Jenkins/GitHub Actions/GitLab/Azure DevOps, Terraform, and Apigee APIs/CLI.
  • Lead API modernization initiatives, including exposing legacy applications through standardized REST APIs.
  • Establish API governance and reusable enterprise patterns.
  • Perform architecture reviews and provide technical leadership to development and integration teams.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues involving API latency, networking, security, policies, backend connectivity, and traffic spikes.
  • Evaluate emerging API/AI gateway requirements. Current Apigee capabilities also include AI gateway controls and transformation of APIs into agent-oriented tools.
