Senior Software Engineer Unity 3D (XR/VR/MR)

Primary Function of Position
We seek a Sr Software Engineer with Unity 3D experience to join our growing Performance Solutions team. Our team's mission is to leverage emerging technologies to help advance minimally invasive care. Our primary customer is the organization's Commercial team, with quarterly deliverables that include updates to visualization, training, and demonstration tools.
As a member of our team, you will work on the development of virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and traditional applications using the latest XR technologies to model surgical robotic hardware. As a Sr Software Engineer, you will be a major contributor to the team and product, working independently on tasks and delivering production-grade work within appropriate timelines.
You will be joining a mature codebase and will contribute to both optimization and new feature development. The successful candidate must excel in an agile, focused, small-team environment and commit to high-quality deliverables on a quarterly basis. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Maintain independent ownership of features and deliver production-grade results on schedule.
  • Scope and estimate your own work accurately, and flag potential schedule risks early when estimates change.
  • Make use of existing APIs and SDKs to integrate backend systems with XR software.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams of developers, designers, and QA.
  • Create clear documentation for implemented features as well as approaches that were evaluated and rejected.
  • Transfer knowledge effectively to and from teammates.
  • Work from requirements, documents or storyboards.
  • Architect software in a modular fashion to support scalable and reusable features.
  • Build, debug, and deploy next-generation XR and traditional applications for Windows and Android using the Unity game engine and C#.
  • Review peer pull requests (PRs).
  • Apply software engineering best practices to write elegant, maintainable, and reusable code.
  • Unit test code for robustness and reliability.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Master's degree or higher is a plus.
  • 5+ years of real-world experience developing and shipping Unity-based applications or video games.
  • Proven track record of onboarding onto a mature codebase and delivering meaningful production contributions.
  • Experience developing for XR technologies and devices such as Meta Quest, HoloLens, and Apple Vision Pro. (Strong Unity developers with little or no XR experience will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of 3D mathematics.
  • Strong knowledge of C#, object-oriented programming (OOP) principles, software design patterns, and software architecture.
  • Ability to self-test, debug, and verify work before handing it off to QA.
  • Strong experience using Git for source control, branching strategies, and pull requests.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.

Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience with Isaac Sim.
  • Experience writing graphics shaders in Unity.
  • Programming experience with Python and/or C++.
  • Experience developing Android applications using Java or Kotlin, including use of ADB.
  • Experience creating and working with animated 3D models.
  • Experience with tools such as Blender, Figma, Photoshop, Substance Painter, ZBrush, and Maya.
  • Familiarity or experience with other game engines such as Unreal Engine, Godot, Lumberyard, or Source Engine.
