Job Description

About the Role

Xpedient Technologies is seeking a Senior Data Analyst / Power BI Developer to support a client in the education sector. This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, analytics, and reporting turning student, enrollment, budget, and operational data into dashboards and insights that inform decisions across academic and administrative teams. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable writing complex SQL, modeling data in Power BI, and translating stakeholder questions into clear, actionable visualizations.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain Power BI dashboards and reports that track key education metrics (enrollment, attendance, student performance, budget/finance, staffing, and program outcomes).
  • Own the full BI development lifecycle: data modeling (star schema, DAX measures), ETL/data preparation, report design, and deployment to the Power BI Service.
  • Write and optimize complex SQL queries against relational databases and data warehouses to source, join, and validate data.
  • Partner directly with academic and administrative stakeholders to gather requirements, translate business questions into analytical solutions, and present findings in plain language.
  • Establish and enforce data governance, row-level security, and data quality standards across reporting assets.
  • Automate recurring reporting processes and refresh schedules to reduce manual reporting effort.
  • Mentor junior analysts on BI best practices, DAX, and dashboard design standards.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a Data Analyst, BI Developer, or similar role, including hands-on Power BI development.
  • Strong command of DAX and Power Query (M) for building measures, calculated columns, and data transformations.
  • Advanced SQL skills able to write and tune complex queries, stored procedures, and views across relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience with dimensional data modeling (star/snowflake schema) for reporting and analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience gathering requirements from non-technical stakeholders and translating them into dashboards and reports.
  • Familiarity with Power BI Service administration: workspaces, gateways, row-level security, and scheduled refresh.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Prior experience supporting a K-12, higher education, or state/local government education client, or working with public-sector reporting requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with education-specific data systems (e.g., student information systems, SIS platforms such as PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Ellucian/Banner, or PeopleSoft).
  • Exposure to Azure data services (Azure SQL, Data Factory, Synapse) or equivalent cloud data platforms.
  • Experience with Python or R for advanced analytics or automation.
  • Microsoft Power BI certification (PL-300) or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with state or federal education reporting requirements and compliance frameworks.
